Hadn't heard of this movie until the other day. It stars Cate Blanchett as one of a group of friends struggling to cope with the aftermath of heroin addiction in the little saigon area of sydney. It's very downbeat and unsentimental. Blanchett excels as the aspirant trying to break free from her past, as does Sam Neill, on top form as a sleazy drugs kingpin.

Has anyone seen this?

I saw it, and I remember thinking that it was pretty good, but I can't remember much other than Blanchett's character was trying to take over a video store and everything got all Talented Mr. Ripley where people are doing everything that you know will blow up later, so the whole movie is just that tension...christ, it kills me, movies like that. I think that the theme music was good, if I remember correctly it was subdued, cool, underwater drowning electronicness? Blanchett was, as she is more often than not, excellent. Sam Neill and Hugo Weaving were quite good, as well. I do remember that.

I've seen it, enjoyed it for both its realism and intensity. I loved the children choral rendition of Flame Trees (at the end of the movie); so sad - crying without consciously knowing why, beautiful, still one of my favourite songs. I think Sarah Blasko's cover of "Flame Trees" was also involved/inspired with the film.

I also think the performances are brave, all of the actors are pushing themselves beyond what we know them to be, and it's fantastic.

Blanchett's preformance had me raving as well... such emotion conveyed without any hint of pretentiousness or overacting... I felt like I was there in the living room with her during the excrucitating exchanges between her and her mother. Also liked the underlying structure of the film - everyone was under pressure and at times close to breaking point, but again, without sentimentality.

Do you think the drugs baron was sympathetic to any extent, or just pure evil?

this got raves in oz, of course, but i was fairly unmoved by it - thought cate was a bit over-written and now i find it hard to recall much about it... the music was good, yes.

there are much better australian films of this dark ilk - metal skin, for one, the second movie by the guy who did romper stomper - also a fabulous film. bad boy bubby is another.
