Small elements of dress that are particularly beautiful.

So I'm in love with this skull-watch that Mary Queen of Scots had:

And I thought I'd start a thread about it and other things like it. I also like Japanese Netsuke:

What other super things like this are there?

I was gifted a pair of cufflinks like this:

Mine are from a '30s Remington, and feature the * - and the ? / keys.

I think that these things are all defined under the term 'accessories'!

I think this is beautiful:

It's an umbrella by the designer Frank Usher. I wish someone would buy if for me for Christmas but it's eighty quid which is umbrella extortion and cannot really be justified. Even, sadly, by me.

I'm really interested in accessories, but in particular jewellery. Did you know that the Victorians (who were very repressed about their emotions) used to give each other jewellery containing tiny different gemstones, and that if you took the first letter of each stone it would spell out a secret message for the person who received it? So you could have one with, say, Lapis, Opal, Variscite and Emerald for LOVE. Randomly and somewhat dangerously they used to use Uranium in their spelling gemstones; I wonder how many people suddenly died from bizarre sicknesses?

If you like the Mary Queen watch (which is utterly lovely, I quite agree) then you'll probably also like these:

I aspire to one day make similar things, but my version will be automaton jewellery creatures for hatpins or brooches.

I love this thread, it's ace! I shall try not to monopolise it.

Olulabelle, I'm transfixed by that beautiful umbrella. Surely it would make you very happy to own it and you can't put a price on that......
Also, please excuse my ignorance but what exactly is the butterfly in the bottom pic? Is it a brooch?

I think it goes in the ear.

Well actually I don't think they go anywhere specific, I think they're just ornaments. But if I had one I would make it into a brooch.
