OMFG.

That's not a band name, by the way. That's me saying, "oh my fucking god."

This is not good, z.

Do you read any of the Music Forum at all?

How about you actually try reading threads about bands you like and following up on other things mentioned in those threads? Or drop by a thread like the "tune of the moment" one in which people will, hopefully, be talking at length about songs they like and why they like them.

Barbelith is a discussion board, lists are not discussions.

Also, without content backing up your recomendations all I have to go on is the fact that the guy from the cat thread likes them. = Me not sold

Still, 'grimskunk' in particular sound fascinating. Hard to overshadow a guy who'd openly recommend Phish in these times.

What is it with all the hate against Phish these days? They are my favourite band and I will never understand why people need to put them down. They were an amazing live band, that put out wonderful albums and performed fun concerts for twenty years.

Then why ask?

Grimskunk's a Montreal pothead band, actually. No surprises, I guess, and they really weren't/aren't very GOOD, but moderately popular on Canadian campus radio stations for about a decade. A mainstay of the "pot-punk" sub-sub-subgenre.

Firstly, I realize this is a discussion board and there is a ridicoulus amount of excellent discussion on all kinds of bands, but I figured a giant list to randomly check things out on might be suitable. The discussions are all fine and have proven to be full of cool stuff.

Given the range of taste and style here, just randomly looking into things you have no clue about might be interesting. I bet the rest of you have a plethora or two of fascinating and awsome music to keep someone busy for hours, if not days.

I dare any one of you to google any band you don't know on the list, I'm sure they all have a myspace or a site with samples to check out. After all, its music, words only go so far. your Expand your horizons, not your egos.

Or does that run counter to Barbelith? No diving into adventure allowed? Did I miss something? Or is every here just grumpy?

Grimskunk is pot-punk? I always thought of them as prog or world punk. meh. Their pretty decent compared to most punk, and they rock live.

And just because I was an irresponsible drug fiend doesn't mean my taste in music is either bad or good, per se. Thats frankly a disturbing attitude. Its like judging my tastes in literature based on my shoes and my having once kicked a dog with said shoes.

So.... the idea here is, we just post a huge list of every musical group we like, in the hope someone will be like "hey, wow, some rock bands exist! I've got to check this shit out!"..?

Well it passes the time I suppose; gimme a couple of months for the compiling and I'll get back to you.

Zedokar, can I politely suggest that you read a few threads in Radio & Music before posting here again? Try to get a feel for the approach: we tend to discuss things, not just spew names for a few screens and then expect pats on the head telling us how our taste ROXXORZ.

Short sentences:

You need to remember that this isn't your message board, it's everyone's message board.

What would the message board be like if every forum was just people spamming indiscriminate lists?

Well -- it'd be a board that consists of a bunch of forums that are just people spamming indiscriminate lists.

So we encourage people to start discussions on this discussion board, not just spam indiscriminate lists.

If you feel some bands on your indiscriminate list warrant discussion, here's what you do:

1. Take said band;
2. Write 500-1000 words on why you like them, what sets them apart, what you think other posters may like about them, their history, their approach to music, and so on.
3. Post said mini-essay on Barbelith.

I know it's hard.

I know it takes "work" and it's not as easy as just spewing forth a list of everything in your iTunes directory.

But it's considerate.

It's considerate of other posters on this board, who don't want this board to be a place where people spam indiscriminate lists (and you are a "people", so you fit in the category).

It's considerate of the history of the board, which is built on intelligent conversation, not people just typing lists of things and expecting conversation to ensue because they are SO AWESOME.

It's considerate of the people that do put thought and effort into this board, and try to compose posts in this forum that take a lot of time and effort.

Read some posts here. Try to see how much effort gets put into this forum.

Then think about what the board would look like if all everyone did was post lists of their stuff.

List after list after list in every forum, dozens a day.

Is this the sort of forum you'd want to visit?

If it is, then Barbelith may not be the place for you.

I apologise profusely for disturbing you Zedoktar.

I wasn't commenting on your musical taste, I couldn't even begin to do so with what you've given us to work with.

What I meant to express was that I do not think that your contribution to Barbelith, that I have come across, warrants me spending time on a search engine compensating for the deficiencies in your post.

If another member of the board, say Stoatie, or Flyboy, or Rizla etc. were to mention a band, I'd be far more likely to follow it up because I feel their contributions to Barbelith and the efforts they go to not just to list bands justify it.

In answer to your question Or does that run counter to Barbelith?

The answer is YES it does run counter to barbelith for the reasons listed above and this paragraph in the "starting a new thread" section of the Barbelith Wiki:

This next bit is really important - Don't just start your thread with a one-line comment or question or a link to another website or news story - even if no one else gets cross (and they will), then the site's maintainance dude Tom Coates will open up a can of public-shaming whup-ass. If you want people to discuss a news story, link to the story, summarise what the story is about and propose some areas of discussion or state your opinion. Barbelith is a place for quality discussion - one-liner or link-only thread-starts are generally considered pretty lazy and usually end up in unsatisfying discussions and arguments about whether the thread should be deleted or not.

Now can a mod lock this thread, its like a crappy version of the "What are you listening to" thread that got locked a year or so back to encourage more posting...

There's a lock in progress, and I suppose at a stretch it can at least provide a good example of how not to start a thread in Radio & Music, or indeed anywhere else on Barbelith.

If only the thread summary had been accurate: a long lost stellae detailing all kinds of great music it is not, the key problem here being the lack of detailing going on.
