Pushing Daisies

So far I've only seen the pilot (a very promising pilot), but I think that ABC signed up for a whole season.

Pushing Daisies is about a guy who can bring people back to life by touching them, but the people he brings back can only stay alive for 60 seconds or someone else will die in their place. To use his powers for something good (and money of course) the protagonist starts working with a private investigator.

The pilot looks beatiful, is funny, romantic and well written.

Has anyone seen it?

I was just going to start a thread about this!

I watched it last night and was somewhat impressed with it. On the whole, the sets and narration are very Tim Burton, but I feel the whimsy and quirkiness of the show may signal a death knell for it if it isn't careful. It's a very nice piece of twee TV, though.

I'm refusing to believe that he hasn't touched his dog in all those years.

I'm going to wait for the second episode before coming to any real conclusion about it.

I illustrated a short comic book prequel for this show that was given out as promotional item in San Diego this year, and part of the benefit of that was getting to watch the pilot a few months early. I quite liked it, although I think that the visual style was a bit too obviously influenced by Amelie, and that the series as a whole could get mawkish and cheesy quite easily. I still enjoyed it though and am looking forward to seeing the rest of its (likely short) run.

Yeah, especially because he found out about the "only once"-thing way after he already had saved his dogs life.

I don't know about that. There are darker things beneath all the cutness which the makers of the pilot built towards. I mean Ned can't just go around bringing people back and killing them again without having to struggle with the idea. Also he killed Chucks father - and he probably will have to tell her about it at some point.

However, I really hope they're going somewhere with this show in the 13 episodes that ABC signed up for.

I don't think anyone's denying there is a darkness beneath the twee, but it remains to be seen if an audience will stick around to find out.

Of course, here is Lost already going on year 3, so there you go...

Turns out the comic I mentioned upthread is actually up on abc.com.

Great comic, Cam!

It's also very telling that ABC would even USE 2 short comic book stories to promote a new TV show. It really seems that now more than ever, comics and stuff that was formerly nerdy/geeky, has hit the mainstream. First it started with the fantasy stuff like Lord of the Rings having mainstream success, then the success of comic book movies like Spider-Man, X-Men movies, etc., then HEROES on TV becoming a huge hit, then mainstream big-time media coverage of things like the big ComicCons in NYC and SF, then major prose book publishers publishing graphic novels, then the fall TV new lineup having mostly shows with fantasy/sci-fi/super-power/vampire elements to them. Vedddy interesting. A trend which I have noticed with much delight.

*ahem* anyway.

And I like Anna Friel, the actress who is the female lead in this show. I'll have to check it out sometime...

Anna Friel, eh? Been wondering what she's been up to.

The Brit invasion continues apace.

Long time, no see. Just finished the first season and I have to say that I found it quite boring. One thing is that the show provides the viewer with wonderful and colorful pictures. I really liked that ubercute, orange - pink - green - yellow and somehow clean visual style.

My impression of the story went from "oh cool! a new and witty idea" to "they didn't quite manage to turn it into something really good."

What I mean is that it started out very promising but then went downhill from there. The stories seemed very flat and the "will they ever be able to touch eachother" question was drawn to far.

Also, maybe because of the writers strike, the first season ended in some kind of a mix of two episodes squeezed into one, which made it really forever lasting. But still, I'd like to have all those beatyful dresses and purses in my own armoire. hehehe
