Unassuming underachiever discovers on his 21st birthday his parents sold his soul (before birth) to Leland Palmer--I mean, the Devil. Instead of sending the boy to Hell or having him kill people--both of which our hero assumes are his options--the Devil tells him he'll be a "reaper," essentially a bounty hunter for escaped damned souls. Our hero doesn't want this, but by gum, he'll do it or the Devil will take his mother's soul instead, and she doesn't even get the option of being a reaper. Hero's slacker friend rejoices. And thus we begin.
I watched the pilot a couple of days ago and I must say, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Aside from the adolescent humour of the best friend/dopey sidekick, this show is clever, well-written, funny, and equal parts icky and serious where it needs to be. Bret Harrison, who plays Sam, our hero, is affable, funny, and cute. Of course, the coup de grace is having Ray Wise play the Devil. Talk about perfection! His Devil is a jokester until he isn't. Again, my only complaint is the sidekick character, Bert "Sock" Wysocki, because it seems pretty one-note and frankly a reason to be annoyed. I guess even reluctant heroes need a goofy foil.
Getting on my feminist high horse for a second, I LOVE that this show was created and written by two women.
