I can't concentrate *without* music and since junior high have done all reading, writing, computer work, well...anything really to music. I own about 10 different pairs of headphones and use them for different occaisions: headphones I can sweat in, headphones that are awesome but hurt my ears after 2 hours, heaphones I could wear forever but can still hear the air conditioner, noise-cancelling headphones for the bus or airplanes, etc. I honestly wear headphones 16 hours a day (I work for a software company and can listen to music at work) most days of the year. I do however listen at very low volumes because of the amount I listen.
My only real caveats, not sure how much light they will throw on the thread, but 1) I can't listen to an album I've never heard and concentrate. So new albums I have to listen to at least once in my free time, reading comics or reading for fun, before I can hear them while concentraing. And 2) I can't concentrate to some bands like the White Stripes, or The Gossip, The Black Keys. I'm not sure why, I like these bands all right, but something in the music just constantly distracts me. It seems like an odd category, and I listen to just about every other type of music fine, but that's what it is. |
