Listening to music whilst doing other things.

So, I've never been able to read or do work whilst listening to music. Or at least I've always found it difficult - if I don't like the music it gets in the way, and I find music that's from a different period to the thing I'm reading throws it off. If it's music I like I feel as though I need to sit and listen to it.

On the other hand, dancing, drinking pink drinks, and other things one might do with other people, if one was so inclined, seem to be fine to do whilst listening to music, especially music I like.

Where do you stand on this?

It really, really depends on whether or not the music has English lyrics or not for me to be distracted by it. My French getting good enough that French-language music is also starting to become a distraction as well, but when I'm listening to anything from a non-Romantic background, I can "listen" to voice as another instrument and not as something that I need to "understand."

At work, I can't listen to any music with lyrics while I'm writing, but I can listen to music without lyrics. Instrumental music is practically a requirement for proofreading large documents, as the rhythm helps me focus.

I can't concentrate *without* music and since junior high have done all reading, writing, computer work, well...anything really to music. I own about 10 different pairs of headphones and use them for different occaisions: headphones I can sweat in, headphones that are awesome but hurt my ears after 2 hours, heaphones I could wear forever but can still hear the air conditioner, noise-cancelling headphones for the bus or airplanes, etc. I honestly wear headphones 16 hours a day (I work for a software company and can listen to music at work) most days of the year. I do however listen at very low volumes because of the amount I listen.

My only real caveats, not sure how much light they will throw on the thread, but 1) I can't listen to an album I've never heard and concentrate. So new albums I have to listen to at least once in my free time, reading comics or reading for fun, before I can hear them while concentraing. And 2) I can't concentrate to some bands like the White Stripes, or The Gossip, The Black Keys. I'm not sure why, I like these bands all right, but something in the music just constantly distracts me. It seems like an odd category, and I listen to just about every other type of music fine, but that's what it is.
