Poetry & The Planets

Hello,

I am looking for help with a project I've been working on for a while now. I am illustrating a book about the relationship between the ancient art of alchemy and it's relationship to modern alchemy with a series of photographs. The photographs are to contain detailed close ups of the metals associated with the 7 planets of antiquity, these being our Sun, Mercury, Venus, our Moon, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. I want to title these photographs using extracts of poetry pertaining to the respective planet the metal represents.

If anyone could help me by pointing me towards any resource I would be extremely grateful. I have already seen Diane Ackerman's, CS Lewis' and Dava Sobel's works (all entitled 'The Planets'), and have hit a dead end that I am sure does not exist. Any and all input will be gladly received. :-)

Not exactly what you're looking for, but would poetry about the Roman gods named after the planets be a more fruitful line of inquiry?

Yes absolutely! That's a very good idea, and will probably yield more results than my more literal approach. Thanks!

I had been thinking of alternatives to strictly poetical titles, by looking at binary expressions of the suns activity, and possibly a passage of notation from Holst's 'Planets' suite for Saturn or Jupiter.

Any ideas like these are also warmly welcomed. Thanks again

Golding's translation of Ovid's Metamorphosis is right up your street for stuff about the Gods with names as the planets. Further, almost all big renaissance poets will make reference to planets and so on, maybe do a search on the Gutenberg project.

Would poetic references to the music of the spheres be too off topic? If not, then I might be able to find some Donne poems for you.

Music of the spheres is definitely not off-topic!! You wonderful people!! This has been more fruitful in one hour than I've been in a month!!!

Maybe to clarify a bit more i don't necessarily need to be as literal as I set out to be. Any suggestion, no matter at what angle they may be in relation to my original idea, are most heartfully received.

A poem I recall from the playgrounds of my youth:

Boys go to Jupiter
To get more stupider
Girls go to Mars
To get more candy bars.
