Wonder Drugs, Panaceas, etc

Hydra vs Leviathan

I don't think Barbelith already has a thread for collation and discussion of substances promoted as "wonder drugs" with the apparent ability to cure a huge number of often unrelated) illnesses or undesirable conditions...

(I found one on the Noni fruit, which is one such substance i hadn't previously heard of...)

The latest one seems to be Rhodolia rosea, which according to this article was known and used in the Soviet Union, but has only just reached the West...

(There doesn't seem to be anything about Rhodolia on Wikipedia, which is odd - most plant genera have at least stubs...)

Any other examples? Is there anything real behind any of the panacea claims made about any of these plants or substances, or are they all just hype? How often do such new "wonder cures" "come to light" then disappear off the radar again and/or are replaced by new ones? Has anything once touted as such a "wonder drug" actually been proven to be of real medicinal value?

I'm very far from being an expert, but I'd suggest searching Entrez/PubMed or Medscape/Medline for reports of clinical trials and then making up your own mind whether to believe the hype.

Here's a page at Bandolier on a rather old 'wonder drug' effective across a wide range of conditions and still under active clinical investigation.

It's all snake oil, marketing something as tonic to dupe the public. Recently I've found bottles of Kombacha with this claim slapped on it. There's always a sucker somewhere. However positive thinking, weather delusion or not, has always been paramount to regaining health.
