Darwinia

I've just finished Darwinia Introversion Software's 2nd game, the one before Defcon.

And wow it's just sublime, it's a Real Time Strategy game, in the vein of Cannon Fodder, where you're commanding an army of programs to protect a civilization of baby AI's created by a reclusive genius from recycled 80's computers. You have to fight your way through the world clearing the 'system' of the red virus who manifest as simple virus snakes, spiders, dragons, ants and then corrupted red Darwinians as well.

One of the great things about the game is how much character it and the little Darwinians have despite, or perhaps because of how simple the game is. With just a few touches, like how when Darwinians die their companions release little kites into the air and or how expressive the story as told by Professor Sepulvda is despite him being just text and a few static pictures.

There's a moment where he's talking about how they've managed to hack the visual systems to be able to see the outside world and the 'camera' pulls back to show us the entire shining sky full of networks that really managed to affect me.

It also amuses me of how much their love of the Spectrum and Sir Clive Sinclair is evident, along with things like 'space invaders' being your bombers .

Have a look at this demo and you can download a playable demo here

Anyone else played Darwinia then?

Oddly, I'm just finishing it the second time as of two weeks ago, having bought it and played it when it first came out and getting seized by Darwinia Nostalgia.

It is indeed fantastic -- elegant, intelligent, and oddly moral when you get into the upper levels.

I picked up the demo of this and couldn't get into it at all. It was beautiful, no doubt, but, well, I didn't really understand what was going on. Oh, there's some red things - let's zap them. Oh, there's some more. Zap them again. I just didn't get it, to be honest. Perhaps I need to lay out the tenner for the full game - I loved Defcon, but then for me it was essentially living out Wargames, which I watched repeatedly in my early teens.

I love Uplink and Defcon, but I also had no idea what was going on in the Darwinia demo. It certainly looked good, though, so I think I'll buy it and hope things are made clearer.

Yeah the demo level is a bit 'here's everything at once' the full game gives you a bit more time to learn, and tanks .

Quick note: having (re)completed the original game and still loving it, I decided to see what the modding community has to offer, and there's a massive multi-level mod called Insurrection that is as good as the original game itself, and significantly more challenging.

I downloaded the demo, but as cool as it seemed, I couldn't really "get into it". I might buy a copy and actually play the whole game some time. I seem to be the only one that didn't like it.

This is an amazing game and it's totally worth getting into. I thought Defcon was extremely boring, unfortunately - It's like, well, global nuclear war really isn't any fun because everyone does lose.
