I really, really want this game, and it came out a couple weeks ago here. Unfortunately, although it will play on my PSP (no regional coding on PSP stuff, apparently), it will still be in Japanese.

Yes, I'm learning, but I don't know nearly enough Kanji to understand what's going on in this game. Even with a sweet electronic dictionary it'll be slow going. Should I bother? Does anyone know if it'll ever be released in the states?

So then, what's it about?

Not sure. From what I gather, Cloud, Aeris and Zak (friend of Cloud, Aeris's old boyfriend, spiky black hair, appeared briefly in FFVII when you discover Cloud's past) are the main components of the story. The Turks and Sepiroth are involved somehow. That's about all I can tell you. But really, the Turks and Sepiroth are all I needed to hear. Eff those other bastards.

I've been hanging out with a dude from Waseda University who is in my Technology and Communications class and has already purchased it, but I don't think he's started it yet or knows anything about the story. I came to Barbelith hoping to get some answers.

Guh. I've tried finding more information, but since my network is connected to Google Japan, all I get is Japanese websites. Curse my poor computer/language skills!

Apparently, though, Cloud plays a very small role. Zack, Aeris, and what appears to be Zack's mentor are the main story. Sepiroth is, of course, the hero turned villian, and the Turks are around doing their Turk thing. This is what I glean from a few trailers and my poor understanding of the Japanese language.

This came out while I was in Japan, the commercials were playing everywhere. I was tempted to get it, but I can't play RPGs more than a couple hours at a time anymore and usually end up dropping them halfway.

I'm sure it will come to America though, probably in 9 months to a year, so don't worry about that. There should be some English info here:

There's no way this won't make it to the US, really. Unless Squenix manage to go bust before then, or the world blows up, or something. Final Fantasy is their earner, spin-offs from VII increasingly so.

Tuna, could you provide a bit more on what FFVII itself is, please, as I think that's possibly what Boboss was after. also, *why* you're looking forwards to playing this game.

What is Final Fantasy VII like? Are you serious? I though everyone who ever played any video game knew about Final Fantasy VII.

Assuming you're not joking, Final Fantasy VII is, as you may have guessed, the seventh installment in the very popular Final Fantasy RPG series. FFVII was, I believe, the first FF to be released on the PlayStation. It was a huge release, at least here in the states, and I doubt it was any less a big deal in it's native Japan. I remember comercials and ads all over the place with taglines like "Quite Simply the Greatest PlayStation Game Ever Made".

And it was. It was freakin' great. The level of animation and direction was top notch at the time, and the mood and atmosphere were so well done that it sucked a whole generation of american kids into RPGs. The story is well done and very gripping, despite the fact that it is full of the standard RPG tropes. I had never played an RPG before, and so on the advice of my friend who had also never played any RPG before FFVII (who also, in fact, didn't give a flying fuck about fantasy or sci-fi or anything resembling those genres) I tried it. He warned me that it devoured his life for a little while, and that's exactly what it did to me.

It may be because the first time I played it I had such an amazing new experience but to this day FFVII is still probably my favorite game of any system of any time. I loves me some Tekken, but there's really no ground to compare the two so I don't see how they can compete with each other.

I could go on, but I would bore you all I'm sure. I'll finish by saying that I've got great memories associated with Final Fantasy VII, and despite the fact that it could never live up to it's predecessor, I can't wait for Crisis Core.

The only question is wether to buy it now or wait for it to be released in English in the States. Granted, I'll be able to read the text much faster, but I'll have to wait nearly a year. Plus buying it now means I'll have one more reason to learn Japanese at an accelerated rate.
