Hehe, that took me a second to get the other meaning, Christina!

And yes, you can also enter the contest like XK did. If this turns into a thread where people are sending chocolate to each other for the next twenty years, I´m all for it!

And norwegian chocolate may taste even better than other european chocolate? I call your bluff! Pm on the way.

Also, I was too slow to send away the next two packages today, the post was already fermé. So they´ll be out tomorrow.

Got home on sunday to find my chocolate had arrived! I'm looking forward to a chocolate testing time tonight. Should we post up the reviews on this thread?

Yes, reviews here, please!

And about an hour ago, I sent another package! Interesting, how I need to pay less, if I manage to arrange the chocolate in such a way, that it turns the package into a letter. A chocolate letter I send thee...

Pink peppercorns and chocolate? Was I mad?

The answer is no. In fact I was pretty sure I'd like it a lot given that I a) love pepper (I am really stupid about pepper), b) am quite keen on nice bit of dark chocolate, and c) have previously dug the infamous chilli-chocolate combination both in sweet and in savoury form.

I wasn't at all wrong.

The chocolate itself, despite being dark, was only 54% cocoa solids, and really quite sweet and morish, but without being just plain sugary. The pepper was a lot less outlandish than it could have been: less of a taste in an of itself, rather it underscored the chocolate, created something richer by off setting the sweetness with its bitter tang, and very, very subtle heat. The combination, while positively unsavoury in nature, had a kind of quiet exclusivity. I could imagine someone, not knowing what it was, eating this and not quite being able to put their finger on why they did or didn't like it, but coming down strongly on one side or the other.

Interestingly I opened the bar when we had guests over and they all got to try a piece - even the Bosun got a bit. They (with the exception of the ignorant child) weren't expecting to like it, and were, as a group, extremely pissed off when they saw no more was forthcoming as I had rammed the rest into my gob.

Oooh, final note. What about that packaging, eh? Around these parts the only stuff that comes in little plastic pouches is tobacco. Somehow it made the act of eating the chocolate feel strangely grown-up.

Cheers, Mist.

More.

Seriously, though, beneath that very unstandard paper wrapper lurks the aforementioned tobacco pouch of chocolate (in bar form).

Just looking at that has got me all hungry and excited.

Wow, Boboss now that´s one well written review; I especially like your description of the group´s reaction! I am still a bit dubious about the pink peppercorn myself, but since it has been so popular, I bought one bar for myself and will also give it a try. I´m glad you and your friends like it! I again recommend sharing some of the chocolate with other people, so that we can get even more opinions.

I recieved two bars from Dolfin as well and I have to say the packaging is wonderful! Sadly I just went onto their website and now note there are some interesting winter edition 30g bars available now to find somewhere in england to buy them!

Give it a go, Mist.

I tend to think that unless you have a moral objection to eating something, it pays to be adventurous. Food's just more fun that way.

It's black and white and red with - as far as I can remember - Japanese iconography.

On the subject of chocolate, my colleague brought some Hershey's kisses into work the other day. For those of you that don't know, the aforementioned kisses are in fact little pieces of chocolate shaped to look like droplets of liquid, and wrapped in silver foil. Like all things Hershey's they're not usually available in the UK. I have, however, tried them before when I've been in the States, and have professed to like them.

Not so much, this time.

Could anyone who knows tell me if what I'm about to describe is usual: these things taste of off milk. You know, like actual human sick. Not at first, mind, and only if you sort of roll them around in your mouth and let the air flow over them, and even then only as a background taste, as the foregrounded sugar does a pretty good job of smothering the flavour, but it was there. With every one that I ate it was there.
There's something in the back of my brain telling me that I have been to this nasty taste place before with Hershey's Kisses but chose to overlook it. To let the sugar do its thing. Now I'm thinking I'm going to avoid Hershey's like the plague. If my experience was representative, these people clearly think we're all a bunch of taste-dead morons. I mean, fuck, OFF MILK!

I received chocolate!

I felt like Charlie Bucket when I opened the first pack - it had a cardboard wrapper and then beautiful silver paper that you had to score with your nail. And the pieces were huge! This one was my most favourite and I hoped it would be, I chose it because it sounded such a lovely colour combination I thought that anything that beautiful should surely taste perfect. It was blueberry and lavender Lindt dark chocolate. Or as Mist says 'Dark Mousse au Chocolat with a Blueberry-Lavender Filling'.

I don't know if you've ever had a plain Aero, but the bar was basically made of this but on a much denser scale covered with lovely plain chocolate and then inside each square was a squidge of luscious, purple, fruity, flowery, sticky goo.

I got it on my fingers and my cheeks and everywhere. It really was like eating some fabulous Willy Wonka concotion. Most lovely! I gave one piece to Mixmage and I'm not letting anyone else have any at all. I'm really not.

The second bar was Raspberry Lindt. Nothing can beat the feel and the beauty of the first bar - such thick wedges - but this raspberry bar was my second favourite. It's just plain chocolate with raspberry flavour and nut pieces. Lovely, but not lovely.

The third bar was beautiful - the same brand as Boboss's so in a beautiful 'smoking pouch' with a little sticker on it. The chocolate inside was dark chocolate with mint leaves and it actually did have the leaves in. It was slightly grainy when you rolled it on your tongue and tasted a bit like minted potatoes if you replace the potatoes with chocolate. I kept thinking about savoury dinner whilst I was tasting it. I did like it - I had some more but it was quite odd. I think it is probably an acquired taste. Nevermind. I am sure I can acquire it!

The last bar was by Starbrook Airlines (Belgium) and the wrapper said it was dark chocolate with cocoa pieces. This was my least favourite because the quality of the chocolate was nothing near as good as the other three. It was really sweet and not melty. I did love the cocoa pieces, all crunchy and bitter in your bite but then they became overwhelmed by the sweetness. I do think that if Lindt had made this bar it would have been heavenly and the packaging was beautiful, old fashioned style, as if it had been bought in the '50's. Perhaps the reason this wasn't so good was because it was airline chocolate. Better stick to flying.

So Mist, thank you so much, This chocolate experiment was a wonderful thing. You have such nice chocolate over there! I did enjoy tasting it and I know that sounds like an obvious thing to say but most of the time you don't really consider the taste you are having, you just eat it and like it. It was very sensual and a lot of fun to eat chocolate with the purpose of recording your experience and I really, really enjoyed myself.

I'm not quite sure how it worked out, but I also got the chocolate today! Usually it takes much longer to get all the way over here, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Just before the mail came, I was reading Boboss' comments about Hershey's kisses:
Could anyone who knows tell me if what I'm about to describe is usual: these things taste of off milk.

Hershey's kisses are a fairly brilliant marketing move - most people wouldn't go out and buy a bag for themselves, but they're the exact sort of thing that well-meaning coworkers or houseguests tend to bring in. I've never been a huge fan of the plain chocolate ones, but since they're often available I've eaten hundreds of them over the years.

At first I didn't know what you were talking about, so I went next door and got a Hershey's bar (I'm pretty sure it's the same type of chocolate). As soon as I ate a piece, I realized exactly what you mean. There is a distinct non-chocolate flavor underneath, but I've never registered it as especially unpleasant. It seems to fade away almost immediately, leaving a very sugary aftertaste. It's odd that I've never noticed that aspect before. I suspect the culprit is the mysterious "artificial flavor" listed in the ingredients.

This seemed like the perfect chance to segue into taste testing, so I started with Starbrook Airlines Milk Nougat Chocolate

Apparently the lack of artificial flavoring makes a big difference, because this is fantastic. It has a very pure and sweet chocolate taste, with a smooth texture. The nougat seems to be tiny bits of almond and pistachio, which tend to get stuck in your teeth but are delightfully crunchy. I've had 3 squares so far (about 1/7 of the bar), but the fact that it's dinnertime soon is the only thing keeping me from having the whole thing in one go.

I can hardly express what a fantastic idea this was, Mist. I'm definitely looking forward to trying the other three!

God, these guys put so much effort into the packaging. Most UK companies - even companies known for their artisan chocolates - simply don't bother.

Figs, I'm not entirely sure it was the artificial flavouring in that, to me at least, Kisses taste distinctly of off milk. Rather, I'm inclined to think it's something to do with the processed milk products that they very likely use.

Lula's got me in the mood for some blueberry, lavender, chocolate goodness, which is surprising as the last time I ate Palma Violets I swore I'd never eat another lavender flavoured sweet again. There is a very real difference in quality, however, between top quality soft centres/fillings and the cheaper variety, so it seems to me that there's a good chance that lavender flavouring could work well in a poncy bar of chocolate.

Now, I'm really gonna have to source some of Brighton's own artisan chocolate - Montezuma's - to send on to you guys. Probably need to get the wedding out the way first...

Last night I tried the milk chocolate With Masala from Dolfin.

I can only agree with the others on the packaging, it suits their brand of chocolate wonderfully and it keeps its gorgeous looks despite being carried in my bag for half a day. On opening the sealed inner packaging you can smell the spicy tang of cardamon, pepper and cloves as you unwrap the first piece. It smells very much like a good Indian restaurant, this did make me pause for a while especially as it was milk chocolate, I wasn’t too sure that the milk chocolate would complement the spices as much as dark chocolate would.

However it did, first taste is of the masala herbs and spices (cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, clove, ginger), then as it melted the milky chocolate sweetened them, it leaves a wonderful milky-spiced taste afterwards as well. If you don’t like Indian Masala curries then you will probably think that you will dislike this chocolate but I would suggest you try it to make sure. The very milky chocolate is enough to take off any harsh edges to the herbs and spices leaving a milder version of their taste, the spices do smell strongly when the packaging is opened but this is not an indication of the level of spiciness of the bar which is mild and morish.

I wrote this a few days ago, I was planning on posting all my reviews together, but given the break (which will be explained at the end) between sessions I decided to change plans and post the story so far now;

***
First Impressions

Aesthetically I preferred the packaging for the Dolfin bars, simple with clean lines and a tactile plastic covering.
Lindt is the most 'traditional', being closest to how I expect a bar of chocolate to look, and Starbrook Airlines has an air of WWII artwork, a beautiful pencil and watercolour portait.
As such, the Dolfin bars intrigued me the most, having no idea what would be under the plastic but assuming it would be different to a less unusual looking (for me) bar, I saved them till last.

***
Starbrook Airlines Milk Nougat
Starbrook Airlines Milk Nougat fits nicely in my hands, the wrapping is simple printed paper covering the familiar thin silver foil.
Like the packaging, the chocolate itself is a simple design.

Smells like milk chocolate. There are hard pieces of pale coloured nougat, nestled in the chocolate. It is both chewy and crunchy and subtly flavoured.

I enjoy the texture but find it tastes like nice but generic milk chocolate, although it is beautifully on the creamy side.

***
Blueberry-Lavender Dark Chocolate

Lindt & Sprungli; 70% cocoa, blueberry and lavender filling.
Classic black and gold paper packaging, although I enjoyed trying to decifer the German description of 'Was ist das besondere an blaubeer-lavendel?'
A strong, sweet blueberry scent emerged as I tore the embossed silver foil, tantalising.
characteristically large squares with the phrase 'lindt' and the 'lindt and sprungli' crest on alternating pieces, the blueberry seeped through the cracks as I tore a chunk to taste.
The blueberry syrup is sweet and sticky (as all good experiences should be) the taste reminding me vaguely of boiled blackberry sweets, and beautifully complimented by the bitter cocoa, the lavender is barely perceptible but is enough to confuse the senses and make this a rather novel experience.

Sweet and bitter balancing each other, overall rather rich; for moments I want to treat myself to an unusual flavour. Good with coffee, but not as an after-dinner sweet!
I think I'll have to wait and let it go down before the next flavour.

(mmm, very grandparenty" - Pacific Dongle, who only managed half a square, which I, sadly, had to finish.)

The Lindt finished me off, one and a half squares and I was done with chocolate for a few days! Damn the rich, sticky goodness! I have never before been beaten by so little chocolate!

You really impress me with your reviews, guys! Reading the masala review, I agreed (it´s one of the 17 flavours I´ve tried so far), but couldn´t really think, how to add to it. The taste reminds me of Spekulatius, a christmas cookie, with almonds, cinnamon and more. If you´re done with the chocolate, try Spekulatius next!

The Masala chocolate is gorgeous! I have some left and hoarding it until I find somewhere that sells in here in the uk. When writing my review I just couldn't find any more words for it either Mist, it just is a wonderful concept which works.

As for the Blueberry-Lavender Dark Chocolate I'm having difficulty thinking of anything to say other than what the other two reviews said. The only thing I can think of is the lovely chalky first taste you get with good quality dark chocolate which descents into deep cocoa finish which is tempered by the lavender top note and blueberry undercurrent.

Never again will I even think about trying to satify my tastebuds with cheap cadburys.

I've had a chance to think about the other three I sampled:

Starbrook Airlines Bitter Sweet Chocolate (54% cocoa)

I've never been a big fan of plain dark chocolate, so I chose this one thinking that exposure to a finer grade would change my mind. I wasn't really expecting to like it as much as the milk chocolate, but taken in direct contrast it held its own fairly well. The cocoa flavor was obviously much more powerful, with a similarly smooth and creamy texture. In that regard it was my favorite of the three darks I sampled, but overall I tend to enjoy mixed flavors more.

Lindt & Sprüngli Pear Intense (47% cocoa)

This bar had a surprisingly intense fruity aroma upon opening the package, and even on the individual pieces it was faintly there. The flavor is a slightly bitter dark chocolate. The fruitiness is mild at first, but much more noticeable as an aftertaste. If I was sampling it without knowing the name I probably wouldn't have identified the taste as pear, but I see from the ingredients that there's also apple and pineapple in there! The almonds add a nice texture and are well-balanced with the fruit flavor.

Dolfin Dark Chocolate With Pink Peppercorn (52% cocoa)

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one. The packaging was definitely impressive, and opening it produced a strong and somewhat intimidating spicy scent. The chocolate was probably my least favorite of the three, being slightly more bitter than the others. The peppercorns were an interesting addition - I found them getting stuck in my teeth, causing the pepper taste to linger a bit beyond the cocoa. I did experience a slight heartburn after eating half of the bar, but it may have been a psychosomatic effect.

Thanks again to Mist for sponsoring the contest, I definitely think the honor of European chocolatiers has been upheld! On the one hand it's a shame to know what I'm missing out on... but since I ate two chocolate bars for lunch today, maybe it's better that I don't have this kind of thing readily available.

Last night was the turn of Lindt's Cherry Intense bar, like the others I enjoy this type of packaging where you unwrapped the silver foiled chocolate from it's paper wrapper then score the foil with your nails to open it up. It has only been put to 2nd place from the superb packaging by Dolfin.

The cherry smell from the chocolate was very strong so I was surprised to see from the ingredient list it only makes up 2% of the overall bar. Cherry always works well with dark chocolate and I wasn't disappointed this time either, the almonds added a toasted burn undertaste which set from the sweetness of the cherry taste perfectly. And also makes it slightly crunchy so the chocolate doesn't melt all at once. The cherry flavour didn't last long but imparted a sweet note to the almond and chocolate aftertaste which was highly enjoyable, this meant I wasn't reaching for another square anytime fast.

The only disappointment with all these lovely chocolate bars is that they are not readily available from my local shops, I have the feeling that my partner who works in London may have better luck for me but I really feel the lack of a good chocolate shop. Instead of the pub or bookshop I wanted to open if I won the lottery I think it may be a chocolate shop instead!

I´ve received Christina´s Norwegian chocolate on friday, and had the problem of having eaten most of it in a couple of minutes, since that didn´t give me enough time to think of what to write about it!

The taste is pretty much the same as another milkchocolate I know, but I can´t recall the brand (reminds me of kinder schokolade, though). The milk contents must be pretty high, it´s like the solid sibling of cocoa. Also, the consistency and the sound when you chew it add to the experience. I´m certain, Kraft Foods designed it that way in their food labs.

For me the main characteristic of this chocolate is, that it triggers a kind of potatoe chips effect. With the high level cocoa chocolate I can eat a bite and be content, but Freia Melkesjokolade would not have any of that and demanded to be devoured. Who knows what kind of grass those norwegian cows are eating?

I recommend this chocolate for people that like milk chocolate and have no problem with eating 100g in five minutes.

Jeg fant, Jeg fant!
