Treadwell's presents:
The Cult of One: Magic and Art of Austin Osman Spare
A Slide Lecture Presenation by Robert Ansell
10 November 2007 (Saturday)
7.15 for 7.30pm start at the Dragon Hall, Stukeley Street, Bloomsbury

Treadwells presents 'The Cult of One' lecture evening, an analytical exploration of the celebrated artist and psychic Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) in a 90-minute in-depth slide lecture. Robert Ansell offers a radical re-analysis of Spare's metaphysical philosophy and creative magical practices, drawing upon evidence from both traditional esoteric sources and recent developments in cognitive science. His presentation will examine Spare’s primary techniques, including the Death Posture, the Neither-Neither principle and his philosophy of Self-Love, considering them in the context of the artist's key influences. The lecture will be illustrated throughout with large projections of Spare's art, many from the Fulgur archives. The evening will appeal to long-established devotees and newcomers alike.

Robert Ansell is a leading expert on Austin Spare. He first encountered the artist over 20 years ago in his career with the fine art auctioneers Sotheby’s. In 1992 he co-founded Fulgur Limited with the aim of creating ‘a nexus between the creative current that informs the work of Austin Osman Spare and modern collectors and students of the occult.’ Since then Fulgur has published most of the key works by and about the artist, including: Zos Speaks!, Images and Oracles of Austin Osman Spare, The Book of Ugly Ecstasy and Borough Satyr: The Life and Art of Austin Osman Spare. Robert Ansell currently lives in Somerset.

Well, that is weird. I just emailed Gypsy to ask him that very question. He's not around, but I will be, I think.

Should be interesting to see if this is an expanded version of the talk he did at the Spare50 thing.

I didnt get to go to that 1st lecture but did manage to go to this one, how was it different? I was a little upset it didnt go into his relationship with Mrs Paterson at all - but maybe he already did that in the previous lecture?

Certainly threw up some intresting ideas regarding A.O.S that i hadnt considered before, notably reinterpretting the Crowley/Spare dislike of each other because of the opposed Spare's rightside-brain approach versus Crowley's leftside-brain approach. While I'm not sure if I sit totally in the (proof of brain function lateralisation) theories' court, it certainly was food for thought.

The lecture also gave me some new idea's to work with spare's techniques, clarified the death posture (and also several of his art works showed different versions of death posture's that I hadnt noticed before) and I'll try aiming for linking more "rightside" activites in mind.

Another idea that also struck me is that Spare's writings should perhaps be approached in a similar way to reading zen parables; in that what hes trying to achieve with his written work and the reader is a similar (transmission of mind-like) process. To me the similarity between the buddist concept of "mind" and kia is close enough to warrant it.

It could also help in getting past the whole problem with Spare's lack of formal magickal structure and could be another key to unlocking more understanding of his work.

I enjoyed the lecture and I'll be intrested if any more pop up - so please post if you recieve any more!

I enjoyed it but I do kind of feel that he did the 'Spare didn't have a magical system' in the last five minutes so he didn't have to talk about it much.

The part on the KIA disappearing in later work was interesting but then so was spotting it hidding in the later works that Robert used for illustrating another point.
