Ah, Greece.
Island hopping is fantastic - get to Athens (not always the cheapest options in terms of flights), take the new metro line from the airport straight to Piraeus (or, of course stop off in the city centre itself - a couple of days should get you all the sights) and once tehre, hop on a ferry to wherever!
Best to choose a set of islands to explore (Ionian, Sporades, etc) so as to make efficient use of the ferry system and head for them! Nothing like the freedom of setting sail for some far off island.
For what you're after, I'd recommend the cyclades - you've got the preserved island of Delos, centre of the ancient Delian league and untouched for a coupel of thousand years (you can travel to it from most of the other cycladean islands), the venetian castles of Tinos and Naxos (my favourite island and a good base to explore the others from)and the islands with better nightlife like Mykonos (very gay friendly) and Santorini (also gay friendly).
It is also possible to get to islands that are very quiet and off the beaten track, like Amorgos, that many tourists don't normally get to and are rich in history, plus have quiet beaches.
One word of warning, if you're going off season, the ferry service slows somewhat, so it might be best to book in advance. Ferries soemtimes appear confusing at first, but in high season run very regularly - with morning, afteronn and evening runs.
Some of mainland Greece is also worth considering - The Thessolonika area, for example, but the islands have a flavour and charm all of their own. |
