Ethics of Friendship and Theft

Little quandry I find myself; my fiance is the assistant manager of a pub, and one of her staff has just been discovered stealing from the pub. We're all friends, more my friend then my fiance's, from before she started working at the pub. Now, do we just right her off, can I still be friends with her, should I still be, or should I even care?

I'm not sure it such a precriptive thing.
The more important thing is "are" you still friends? How do you feel about this person? Where do you want to go with it?

well, obviously what you should do is let her keep stealing, in exchange for a cut of the money. then make your demands increasingly, uhm, demanding, until she feels trapped and is forced to call the A-Team to get you off her back.

What are the circumstances? Is the friend depressed, does she have a drug habit, is it a cry for help, does she not make enough to cover her granny's heart surgery or anything along those lines?

Sometimes people who are very young & inexperienced will not be fully aware of how their behavior affects others, but I personally am not a huge fan of hanging around while they figure it out.

Amen to that.

Will come back to this thread when I get home.

She's recently moved house, so I thought it might be because she's skint because of rent, but to be honest, I wonder if it's not just greed. My feelings; not really that bothered, it's not like she was steeling off of me, and her manager's horrible, to both my friend and my fiance,. However, my fiance's very angry and quite upset, so I wonder if I should be too.

Did your fiance help her get the job?

Yeah she did, but she doesn't seem to be pissed of about that, more just disapointed and angry at the betrayl.

angry at the betrayl

That is the betrayal though, she's called your fiance's abilities as a manager into question because she was responsible for hiring her originally. It's a horrible position to be in and I think in that case you should be a bit pissed off because your friend has basically made your fiance look a lot more rubbish than she had a right to.

True. I suppose it's about solidarity, and my loyalty obviously lies with my fiance. Oh well.

Well if you're sad about it then talk to your friend, she's the only person who can tell you what was going on there.
