Language is a virus (from outer space)

Language Log had an interesting entry a while back that I'm just now catching up on -- a brief overview tracking the use of "viral" from something strictly epidemiological to its current marketing-buzzword status.

It's an interesting bit, because they bump Burroughs, and then a further edit brings in The Invisibles, which did a fair bit of work with language viruses, Key 23 and all that.

Probably because I'm bored stiff right now, I keep turning the whole "virus as an idea transmission method" thing over in my head, and it's interesting at least that people now seem to be more capable of conceptually splitting method of transmission from thing being transmitted. Content separate from mechanism of delivery. McLuhan, where are you?

Did that picture catch a virus, too, or why doesn´t it show up?
