I'm A Cyborg But That's OK was released in 2006 following the success of Chan-Wook's well received 'Vengeance Trlogy'.

It is a surreal tale of a girl who believes she is a combat robot who is committed into a psychiatric ward after slashing her wrists and inserting electrical wires in order to try and recharge.
Whilst inside she licks batteries to try and recharge, talks to vending machines and starts a relationship with a fellow patient.

It is a very charming film and very entertaining. Very unlike Chan-Wook's other films and quite unique.

What did other barbelithers think of it?

For my sins, I hadn't even heard of it til now - been a bit out of the loop.

Will buy it, watch it and return here to gush, more than likely. Even when the quality of his work varies, Chan-Wook Park is a consistantly fascinating director, IMHO.

I saw this last week and thoroughly enjoyed it, although for much of the first half I was concerned by how much we may have been expected to laugh at the mentally ill. The depictions were well into the realms of caricature, and even just a little more accuracy and research would have produced a better movie.

Where this film succeeded for me was in the romance stakes. There were so many beautifully judged scenes, none more so than in the whole section that covers the introduction, installation and first operation of the Rice Megatron. Il-soon is great here, using all the skills he's acquired as the kleptomaniac of imaginary things, working within the framework of Young-goon's illness and utilising it rather than attempting to force her to change. He accepts her as she is: she may be a cyborg, but that's OK for him.
