As for the evils of Facebook- well, as was said earlier, it is a public space- like the Internet in general- don't say anything you wouldn't want overheard.
The article from The Guardian certainly has some good specific information to keep abreast of, although I'm reluctant to throw the baby out with the bathwater, like the quote I first heard through Ani DaFranco, although I'm sure it goes back further than that- "Any tool is a weapon if you hold it right"...
I didn't give them my email password either- that's just bad security, and I do think it's more than a little suspicious for them to ask for that in the first place!
Myself, I've managed to connect with some dear old friends that I haven't been in contact with in years, many of whom I have gone on either meet in person, if possible, or to talk to them on the phone (using our private emails to exchange numbers). It has also been a really useful tool for community organizing here in town...
What's really evil though, are those damn applications, I started refusing those a while ago, all those flashing letters and dumb jokes- uhg! Just say no! ;-) |
