I heard that his resignation was timed to coincide with the Congressional recess. Makes sense.

How much of an impact will this have? With the wiretapping bill already passed, I can't think of any high-profile, pressing issues requiring his attention...

What Josh Marshall is predicting is a (very cheesy) recess appointment for a replacement. No Congressional debate.

Other pundits say either that, or else no replacement at all - just let the Solicitor General (a post I'd never really been aware of) fulfill the duties until 2009.

Bush asked Michael Mukasey, a former federal judge in New York, to replace Gonzalez. He is actually being praised by Democrats and some moderate Republicans. The very conservatives, those that thought that Gonzales was a good Attorney General, believe that he is too liberal and that Bush should have nominated Theodore Olsen, the former Solicitor General. We will see soon how his confimation hearings go
