Can anyone tell me about Nigel Kneale? i read somewhere that the X-Files ripped off some of his ideas but I'm not sure which ones. Since that show had some interesting ideas (coupled with poor execution) I'd like to see the source material. [Like all those folks that went looking for the Cornelius Chronicles after reading the Invisibles] As far as I can tell he only wrote a couple of books (the Quartermass ones) and some short stories. Are any of these worth reading? I think he was involved with television too (so feel free to move this thread if needed).

I've read his book 'Quartermass'. That's the one written & set in the 70s-80s - a sequel to the original TV show scripts.

It's not exceptional, but it's pretty cool British disaster-based Sci-Fi in the John Wyndham/John Christopher tradition.

The man rocked. Go here

Check out the interviews. Yes, he is better known as a tv scriptwriter than an author. I can just remember seeing some of his stuff in the late 70s and it never failed to put the willies up me, I can tell you.

My first encounter with KN was the novel adaption of the 70s version of Quatermass - which I was underwhelmed by. Much more impressive were the scripts for original 3 series from the 50s, esp. Quatermass and the Pit. When I actually saw this on TV years later, I was quite let down. The special effects were (naturally) crap and rather stilted performances high-lighted his patchy dialogue. But as a story QATP was terrifying.

I hadn't made the X-Files link, but it is actually quite strong:
Quatermass II is a paranoid conspiracy theory/alien invasion combo.
QATP deals with genetic manipulation and alien/human hybrids with a strong occult theme.

The main difference between NK and Chris Carter is that the former is a better story teller and is less inclined to short change his audience.

This has reminded me of another possible idea rip-off which didn't register at the time. Can't remember the title of the X-Files episode in question but it was one of the clever-clever pomo comedy ones; there was a self referential sub-plot about a film being made based on Mulder and Scully's exploits, and it ended up with a load of ghosties doing a song and dance routine. Anyhow, the main plot involved Jesus, a naughty priest and some ancient artifacts. In one bit they give a pottery fragment to this sound expert who explains that ceramics can 'record' sound which can be recovered and played back if buggered about with in the appropriate manner. Something to do with vibrations, you know the sort of thing. This pot was supposed to have recorded one of Christ's sermons. I remember thinking, wow, cool. NOW I remember that Nigel Kneale did a series called - I think - 'The Stone Tapes' about a flint cottage which has recorded, in its very walls, the spooky noises of ancient carry-ons. Quite a specific one that.
