Over the past month or so (I actually finished a while ago) I've been privileged to be one of the proofreaders for Therefore Repent!, an OGN by Salgood Sam and Jim Munroe. Salgood's name you might know -- he's a Canadian comic book artist, and has worked on projects like Sea of Red and the new Planet of the Apes comic. Munroe is a SF author whose work I'm honestly not familiar with, but he self-publishes his work through the Web site No Media Kings (also the publisher of Therefore Repent!). One of his books is called Flyboy Action Figure Comes With Gasmask, which should endear him to at least one poster 'round these parts.
As the proofreader for the project, I got to read the whole thing.
And it's fantastic.
Here's a page:
-- and the art stands up for the whole project.
It's billed as a "post-Rapture graphic novel," and I guess (but I have no authority on this) that it is in some ways a response to the whole "Left Behind" heap o' crap. But it's not tedious, which a lot of post-Apocalyptic/post-civilization stuff seems to be. It's genuinely fascinating, intriguing and strangely believable.
Preview here.
Featuring uncorrected lettering, so don't get on my case about proofing errors, 'kay? Generous preview, too -- 47 pages out of 154.
Do I have complaints? Sure! I can complain about anything. Mainly, in this case, that it has a lot of Gaimanesque notes -- a bit "magick," a bit twee at points -- and a definitely Morrisonesque finish. But for all I know, Munroe doesn't even read comics on a regular basis, so I can forgive him this. On the whole, it's a beautiful, intelligent, intriguing and immersive work that I can't recommend highly enough.
It's launching on August 16 in Toronto (Cam!), in the lead-up to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. I obviously won't be able to make it (Quebec, day job) but I'm officially jealous of anyone who does.
It's going to be published Stateside by IDW in January, so Americans can wait for a domestic release or (I imagine) order it from No Media Kings here in Canada early-like. |
