Fried glass studios

hey! it's my first thread! and it's not about me! *sheepish grin*

i am currently amazed and in love with the work of an old art school mate i have recently reconnected with. fried glass studios is based in rhode island, usa. i could go on and on about each piece that i love but i am particularly enamored of the arm on this page here. poke about and make sure you also see the octopus chandeliers and the greek helmet.

for me, glassblowing has always been about vases and cups and bowls. it is refreshing to see someone sculpt with it, and by that i mean freestanding objects that do not provide a service or have a functionality other than to create a space in the world reflecting whatever is going on in the artists' mind.

I'm at a loss for words over the arm, but the greek helmet is my current favorite. I need to dig around the site more. the venus figures are impressive. I'd love to see his work in person as I find glass tends to glow gem like under light...?

Those are gorgeous. The Golden Head is extremely compelling. It and the torso with the octopus are among my favorite pieces there.

I'm crazy about that arm. (It reminds me of those glorously artistic anatomical etchings from old medical books, where you'd have some chap gracefully posing amongst attractive scenery, apparently unaware that he's naked down to his liver and lights.)

The use of colour is especially bewitching. Glass has the potential to manifest colour in this really pure, intense way, like almost nothing else, and this artist takes full advantage of that.

It remindes me quite a lot of glossy display screens, the way the light reflects off the glass, amplifying the underlying color.
Personaly, I think it would be neat if he did this, and ran lines of color underneath, similar to the layer of red, but instead run viens of yellow, etcetera, around the arm creating a hollow, dimensional look.
