Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

So I'm digging through some of my older boxes and I come across the Archie TMNT series. Re-reading it, I can't help but be struck by how good it really was.

From environmental issues (which admittedly the series was heavy-handed enough early on to be considered dogmatic), to musings on death and existence, to teaching not only knowledge, but respect of and appreciation for "alternative" religions, this was a pretty heavy series for something that normally gets tossed into the kiddie bin or derided as nothing but a marketing tool.

If anything, the above-mentioned marketing would be the series' only real weakness. It seems like every issue would feature the introduction of at least one new character, at times shoe-horned pretty viciously into the plot.

So. Thoughts? Fond memories? Etc. etc. etc.?

The constant introduction of characters was always a bit uncomfortable, but it's even weirder when they weren't toy or cartoon tie-ins, but out of whole cloth (or near to). I have exceedingly excited memories of the series, though, and wish I had the comics on hand so I could confirm for myself that it really was that fun. I'd even probably torrent them, since I own the whole run, anyway.

It certainly had its ups and downs, but they were often the same issues having both the severe ups and severe detriments. Gunning off the Mutanimals was a bit WTF, certainly. Cosmic wrestling is severely underrated as a plot tactic, as is a nudist rhino-man with a gun fetish, extended walks around the globe involving non-Christian religions as demonstrated through anthropomorphized warriors, and y'know, Shredder coming back fifty-seven times from total death, and (if I'm remembering this right) stealing the black stone of Mecca.

Let's just say I'm still more interested in this series than I am Sectaurs or (American) Transformers comics.

(I moved to update the topic of my other TMNT thread to avoid confusion.)
