Thank you imaginary mice.
It's quiet at night because there is literally no work to do. We cannot magic up work - it really, really isn't that kind of job - and so we are told we can sit and read books at our desks if we like. I have frequently asked the boss for other jobs but there are no other jobs that take anything more than a few seconds.
The essential thing about activities to do at my desk is that I have to stay alert. There is absolutely nothing to do between the hours of 0330 and 0600 but I need to stay awake and focused.
As far as why I'm in this job: it's well paid, it's enjoyable, it's demanding, it comes with large amounts of job satisfaction, shift work suits my lifestyle (I need ,flexible hours). It's just very bloody quiet at night, which is the trade off with how it usually is (manic, not enough people to do the work). I have no urge to study to do something different, I'm happy where I am.
The assumption that I'm ripping off the boss by doing fun things in their time is not valid. Next door they have permission to watch DVDs on the plasma screen wallboard or have a little portable telly. The only difference with what I'm doing is that I'm using my personal workstation to do the watching, hence my question.
fridgemagnet - self righteous bell end, much? The same cap fits. Next time ask me questions about what I do rather than assuming that I'm lazy, that you know what my job is like, that I haven't already considered alternatives and that I'm happy to *steal* from the boss (although no court would accept your definition of theft). The only ethically questionable thing that I'm thinking of doing is using my workstation in a manner for which I don't have permission, a matter for which I have decided to seek permission. If your defence is that you can only judge by the words I have written then ask yourself questions about your quickness to judge and whether you have all the information prior to doing so. |
