Suppose one were to work night shifts, but be using a PC that had Windows Media Player and a DVD drive? Suppose it became very quiet on those night shifts...

Now, I know IT can monitor internet usage. That's quite a high profile thing, so they do it actively and produce reports on it. However...

Can they check DVDs used? And even if they could would they be likely to check the usage regularly?

Effectively, the first question is this: can I get away with being paid to watch Excel Saga all night on this set of shifts?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Oh, sorry...

It is technically possible but quite unlikely that they do this.

I wouldn't consider this a risky proposition at all given how much would be involved in them somehow auditing individual optical drives to check somehow what media was played on them.

What might prove more of a stumbling block is that WMP doesn't play DVDs as standard, and it would be relatively easy to audit the software installation you'd be forced to do to either upgrade WMP or replace it with another app that did handle DVD playback.

Be aware, nearly all DVD playing applications will store a 'bookmark' file on your computer when you play a movie. This is so that if you stop watching it then go back later it remembers where you were on the disc. It's usually found under the Program Files for the application in question.

Alternatives?

eBook on your phone? Video iPod with ripped movies? Portable DVD player?

If you can get away with a small amount of net traffic (~2.1mb) you could download Media Player Classic.

The whole program runs from a single executable file, and does not therefore need to be installed. It doesn't use the windows registry, and it won't leave files anywhere. It can play DVD's and its open source.

Or perchance this list of media players you can launch from a USB stick might help?

there are a few ways to keep tabs on what people are doing with workstations. you're right in thinking most attention is paid to the internet traffic and that's usuallly via router traffic reports. I can easily tell who is surfing what at any given moment and generate reposts accordingly.

no one maybe paying any attention to the use of the workstation installed software and the BYOS usb option works well for some folks. However there is always the over the shoulder risk especially if you are being videotaped for security purposes.

I'd suggest asking up front if you can listen to music to help you stay alert during slow hours. the request for music is less likely to annoy ayone as most people are well used to listening while doing other work. If the response is a shrug and low impact no warning then DVDs are probably safe as well.

Cheers all, some interesting ideas. Can the applications launched from a memory stick also be launched from a CD?

XK - they're fine with us listening to music, we have a couple of stereos in the office. They would probably argue that as we have those then we wouldn't need the computer to do it.

More importantly, perhaps, is the question: does your work really entail just sitting there doing nothing such that watching DVDs is a good use of your time? What about doing something productive, or at a very minimum studying up on some subject of interest that might ultimately allow you to get a job that doesn't involve a boring night shift?

Father Mirror, your post wins all the self-righteousness awards and makes you seem like a right bell end. Assume things much?

No, he's quite right, there's no excuse for this sort of behaviour. It's basically theft. They are paying you for heaven's sake!

I'm sure there are plenty of things you could be doing around the office if you are not occupied - tidy up a bit, file some papers, that sort of thing. Or ask your line manager if you could have some extra work, as you are being underutilised.

Failing that you could do something for charity, with appropriate permission from your employer of course. Remember - it's not your time, it's their time.

Seth, I have to say I agree with Father Mirror. You should do some studying, get a better paid job and then you can finally think about the really important things in life. Forget about anime, what should concern you now that you are approaching your thirties are a) a pension and b) a mortgage.

Father Mirror – I’m a bit confused. I’ve got a degree, a professional qualification and a well-paid job. But I do spend quite a bit of time on the internet while I’m at work. Do I, too, need to look for a new job even though I’m quite happy where I am?

Seth

Thank you imaginary mice.

It's quiet at night because there is literally no work to do. We cannot magic up work - it really, really isn't that kind of job - and so we are told we can sit and read books at our desks if we like. I have frequently asked the boss for other jobs but there are no other jobs that take anything more than a few seconds.

The essential thing about activities to do at my desk is that I have to stay alert. There is absolutely nothing to do between the hours of 0330 and 0600 but I need to stay awake and focused.

As far as why I'm in this job: it's well paid, it's enjoyable, it's demanding, it comes with large amounts of job satisfaction, shift work suits my lifestyle (I need ,flexible hours). It's just very bloody quiet at night, which is the trade off with how it usually is (manic, not enough people to do the work). I have no urge to study to do something different, I'm happy where I am.

The assumption that I'm ripping off the boss by doing fun things in their time is not valid. Next door they have permission to watch DVDs on the plasma screen wallboard or have a little portable telly. The only difference with what I'm doing is that I'm using my personal workstation to do the watching, hence my question.

fridgemagnet - self righteous bell end, much? The same cap fits. Next time ask me questions about what I do rather than assuming that I'm lazy, that you know what my job is like, that I haven't already considered alternatives and that I'm happy to *steal* from the boss (although no court would accept your definition of theft). The only ethically questionable thing that I'm thinking of doing is using my workstation in a manner for which I don't have permission, a matter for which I have decided to seek permission. If your defence is that you can only judge by the words I have written then ask yourself questions about your quickness to judge and whether you have all the information prior to doing so.

I won't presume to talk on behalf of fridgemagnet, but it seems to me that ze might be indulging in a bit of sarcasm there, Seth. Otherwise f's posts on f's work/life of late would seem slightly paradoxical, no? Or perhaps not so much paradoxical as hypocritical.

What's up, Father Mirror? Young Conservatives club chuck out early on a Thursday? Don't you have some GCSE Business Studies homework to be getting on with, you young scamp?

BTW Seth, wtf? I've seen you bend over backwards to be Captain Reasonable with his Amazing Reasonable Powers for some of the biggest wankers to ever pollute the internet, but you can't read a couple of recent posts by a long-term member before going off on one? Admittedly I think most of fridge's job related kvetching has been confined to Lj but this thread is still on the first page.

Seth on the DVD front here's an experiment you can try. Many music CD/DVD these days have a video movie component. Slap one of these puppies in and watch the vid. If someone calls you on it explain you were just trying to listen to music as that was allowed if questioned why you didn't use the stereo explain you wanted to use your headphones rather than force everyone to listen to whatever.

If they are going to snag you & freak out this gives you a nice way to scrape out.

(I'm now ethically debating if suggesting this is a Bad Thing...)

Not sure what you're getting at here MC. Explain to me more about this comparison you're drawing and how it operates.

Yeah dude. Especially if the bloke reading hasn't also read the context. No harm done here, I hope likewise.

Quite funny: I just asked my boss about this. She said she couldn't see it being a problem, and that if IT mentioned it that's also what she'd tell them. It's nice when you're on the same wavelength innit.

Oh, dear, you've caught me out! But no, it's not conservatism you perceive, but a conviction that video entertainment is universally a mind-numbing waste of time. Perhaps Pacific State is right and I'm just not watching the right DVDs.

Though I doubt it.

Seth, I'm pleased you can take such satisfaction in a job that to me would be utter torture.

Last dvd was The Day The Earth Stood Still. That was several months ago, I think.

Instead of TV? Well, if you must know, cooking and cleaning and my usual wifely duties simply devour my time, what with the baby and all.

ONLY NICE THINGS
13:05 / 04.08.07
Oh, that's a shame, because I'm not a wife and I don't have a baby. So, let's try a different tack. Let's say that you have been removed from your role, and placed in a room, with nothing to do except not leave that room for the next two or three hours. How would you like to spend that time? What book or writing project, or piece of art, are you currently wishing you could spend your time on?

Mirror
13:37 / 04.08.07
In a room with a few hours to spare? Well, I tend to fill such moments by reading journal articles on Bayesian networks and kernel methods. I still have to get the visual odometry-based slip detection system for the robot working, and then take another look at the autonomous control system.

I actually did have a bit of time to spare this last week. Of course, instead of doing the above (which I really, really need to do) I spent it learning Lisp. But hey, got to have a bit of fun sometimes, right?
