U.C.B or P.I.T?

Tell me which NYC improv scene rates higher in your estimation - and if you've participated as a teacher, student, performer.
Is another group worthy of consideration?

Tx!

In my day job, I spend much of my time exhorting colleagues not to use acronyms without writing their meaning out in full in the first instance. I urge you, also, all of you, to follow this rule of thumb, in order that you may communicate your ideas more effectively.

Shut up, U.C.B. is clearly the superior improv scene, and I'll kill any person who says otherwise! P.I.T. are hypocritical wastrels destroying the very fabric of spontaneous theatre and I curse them and their mothers! PTUI! I spit on them!

Also, I doubt most Barbelithians -- or even most New Yorkers -- are familiar with the People's Improv Theater or the Upright Citizens Brigade.

(Or the Magnet, for that matter.)

Oh! I thought you meant this UCB and this PIT.

Boy is my face red.

My stepson's uncle has some kind of affiliation with the UCB (enough that my daughter sleeps in a UCB shirt).

I suddenly feel like we've joined a gang.

What have they done to my family??

Grant, I think you may be a nexus for everything everywhere. I really do.

Based on the short-lived Comedy Central series "Upright Citizen's Brigade", I'd have to go with... The Upright Citizen's Brigade. Plus, Amy Poehler got her start there! Come on!

"Oh, you've handled my ass-pennies. You've ALL HANDLED MY ASS-PENNIES!"

Flyboy: Private jokes *are* rude. Thanks for the reminder.

EVG: Thanks for the Magnet recommend.

Grant: If you see your daughter flashing the UCB "sign" buy her a violin - the B is really tough to do and she must have exceptional manual dexterity.

Electric Monk: That is the bottom line, isn't it? In addition to being one of the funniest comedians working she's also married to Gob (Will Arnet.) The old UCB show is what got me interested and we all owe them a debt for their wonderful work.

Monk - In re-reading your post it appears that you already nicely knew of Pohler-Arnet. COME ON!!!

I didn't know she was married! Honest!

Seriously, go with the UCB.

having not only enjoyed the show but also actually been to the UCB theatre, I'd highly recommend both.

Never heard of the PIT though. I will have to investigate.

uhm, in more detail since that was a dumb post...

the UCB is a cool venue. I like the building they're in and I like the cheap beer.

the first act we saw...don't remember the name, was so-so. worth seeing but not memorable. Then was the LOFT group, which was awesome. cool weird humor, well tied together over the course of the skit, lots of jokes that would have been totally lost on anyone who hasn't seen way too much LOST.

the TV show, of course, had things like buckets of unmitigated truth, kicking your ass just like jesus would have, and was bold enough to strike a blow against prejudice, specifically prejudice against astronauts. it always makes me sad to watch Mad TV or Saturday Night Live when I know what sketch comedy could truly be.

It's all done with filecards.

"Improv"? You don't fool me, Smash--nor you grant, with your oh-so-innocent family snapshots.

Only I, out of all of you, know the TERRIBLE SECRET behind those initials. Only I know the DIRE THREAT contained therein. They have come for me, as I always knew they would. And they dare flaunt their horrid CONSPIRACY here in the public gaze, KNOWING that none will have wit to grasp the HIDEOUS TRUTH...

Or will they? Are there others? Are there other MINDS out there, not drugged by Eastenders and Cosmopolitan and newspapers and bread and Hollywood movies (except, unaccountably, The Matrix, which is ALL TRUE) who can hear my plea for solidarity and aid?

Is anyone else on this board NOT a FEEBLEMINDED HUMANOTON?!!1!???????

every time I see that car commercial about how the world is full of SHEEPLE who live boring lives and drive boring cars and there's a small number of DEVIANTS who drive Scion cars and are therefore very interesting...it reminds me of Barblith. which is probably the best thing about it. well, and the sheeple are kind of cute in a bewildered way.

A suggestion: before you choose PIT, UCB, or the Magnet

Go to a show for each.

See if you can sit in on a class for each.

Read about the teachers you're likely to have (NOT just the stars on the faculty).

Talk to a student or two.

Then decide.
