Anyone fans of Michele Soavi's Cementary Man based on the work of the fumetti, Italian comic book? I thought it was a great movie commenting on death and the love we have for it in media. I think his direction was awesome! If you like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead or Peter Jackson's Brain Dead aka Dead Alive I think this movie is right up your alley! I was a fan of Soavi's work when I saw the Church a horror movie about the knights templar. I recently saw Stagefright and the parallels of theater death and death in movies and real life was close to brillant! Check out these movies and tell me what you think!

I've loved this movie for many years. Some friends and I found it on a video store shelf back in college, and after a single viewing I went out and bought a copy. I even have the soundtrack, which is not particularly easy to find.

The marvelous thing about this movie is the remarkable way in which the characters are drawn. In the midst of what could have been a dreadfully b-grade zombie flick, you have these amazing individuals that are fully fleshed out despite having only a couple of lines. And, of course, the ending is excellent with a twist that finally gives you a context for everything you have seen.

Have you seen Soavi's other films? I saw the Church and liked that one as well. His films are beautifully shot. Stagefright his earlier film is good as well have you seen it and what do you think?

Haven't seen either of them, but now that I know they exist I'll certainly have a look!

Cemetery Man turns up in this older discussion on Zombie movies.

What makes this film really work for me is the way it combines goofy humor with a sort of deadpan existentialism. "No, this is an art film! Don't laugh!" it seems to be saying. And then the weird henchman puts his girlfriend's reanimated head inside the TV set.

I thought it was the next step of zombie movies. Loving the dead and death. The scene where they are kissing with shrouds over their faces was, like the rest of the movie, beautifully shot which only heightens the theme of the movie, which I thought was accepting and loving the dead. Have you seen the Church or Soavi's other film Stagefright they are both pretty good as horror films that add some thoughts to the genre. It's no surprise that Michele Soavi is now dubbed the next director in line after Mario Bava and Dario Argento as the Italian Horror Maestro Supreme. The shots where the POV is being buried and where the camera seems to rise from the grave points to the fact that we have to fear and transcend our fears of death to be fully living and breathing. And the last scene where he almost fell off the cliff with his VW bug I think hammers this theme in.
