Was there ever a Gold Digger thread?

I see GD mentioned a lot around here but no dedicated thread unless I'm a dummy.

Overall, Fred Perry is a little like Adam Warren to me - great art (and it's really come a long way from the first issues), fun ideas, but sometimes the pop culture references and silly emphasis on sex are annoying. Also I love that the GD universe has such an over the top mix of magic and sci fi, but it's gotten to the point where it's hard to tell what the hell is going on, there's so many different kinds of super powers fighting each other. Is a level-G living spell creature tougher than a class 9 electro-whatsis generator? fucked if I know, and I think he's having a hard time telling them apart anymore too.

but anyway...this latest story arc, trying to free Brittany from Quasi space, is kind of losing me and I'm not sure why...part of the problem is, as always, that only about every third issue seems to actually show up on the shelves in the store and I'm always digging through back issues trying to fill gaps.

What the hell's going on? There's the big bad dragon(s?), and Zero the super ninja, and Gothwrain...feels like a lot of shit going down all at once, but lately a lot of the action has been hard for me to follow or all laid out as spells fighting spells and it's all special effects and pretty but I don't really get it.

I dig parts of the series, but I can't be bothered to keep up with it for broad stretches. Part of that is, yes, that it's often not stocked by whatever my local comics shop happens to be, and I've been moving around the country so much the past few years, there doesn't seem much point in arranging single issues of anything to be special ordered for me, or just held. But a large part of it is just that a lot of the plotlines I can remember, the hook, the motivation, was basically to get through the storyline. Gets old after awhile.

I do really like that it's a series based in whatever Perry happens to be interested in at the moment. There aren't enough of those, and most of them come out of Vertigo. Unfortunately, rather than covering ideas, politics, the eternal questions of manking, even in the way that Preacher or Transmet did, the book is a rumination on RPG tropes more often than not.

I'm a big GD fan...probably one of the three biggest GD fans on the planet (and, as it happens, one of the mods on the AP board for the title). Hence, I tend to recommend it whenever one of these "Indy Comics you like" threads comes out.

And yes, Fred is a huge fanboy at heart. But he DOES have a goal in mind, and it's not that far away. A lot of details that may have seemed unconnected are falling into place. It's more than goofy gags and T&A.

After all, he's been the sole writer (and, for the most part, artist) on the book for the last 15 years....

As for what's going on:

Britanny, adopted sister of Gina Diggers (the main character), was lost in a space warp during a major battle. Since then, she's been trying to use all of the discoveries she's made (including some ancient ubertech called Beta Technology) to rescue her.

Meanwhile, Brit was rescued by a future version of Gina, who is involved in a game of cosmic chess with Dreadwing, the dragon Gina defeated in her very first appearance. A lot of the subplots are related to that in one way or another.

it'll be cool to see him tie it all together, if he can.

actually I think I've decided the subplots are the biggest hurdle for me (aside from availability) - I miss one issue and then when I pick it up, there's these troll people trying to rescue elf people from the magical cage universe controlled by somebody who's also fighting somebody else...what the fuck? who are you guys? why do I care? where the hell is Gina?

he needs a Cliff Notes or something to summarize. and maybe a list of all the B characters and who they are *and how they're related in any way to characters whose names I might actually recognize*.

you know, now that I live in NYC I need to do more of a cross-section of comic book stores. if I were looking through 10 sets of back issues instead of 1, I might actually be able to fill all these holes in my understanding.

I think these may help:

Gold Digger Sacred Library

GD Sourcebook

(although the latter is only half-finished)

Or you could ask me.
