So i just thought it was time to talk about the genius of this band- i missed out on them last year but fell in love when i was leant the album at the start of the year.

The album Gulag Orkestar is simply one of the best records of the last 12 months IMHO- imagine the gypsy style balkan folk music that inspired Neutral milk hotel slowed down into delicate songs and fronted by a a singer who sounds like both Thom York and David Byrne (but in a good way).

The record sounds like i wanted Gogal Bordello to sound like, but don't. Accordions, mandolins, violas and trumpets make up this sound, not surprisingly members of Neutral Milk hotel were involved in the recording of this album. It seems like this is a continuation of the sound they created with the aeroplane over the sea album- although gentler in amny ways.

I got to see them a couple of weeks back at Koko's and was blown away by the simplicity of their sound- totally unlike watching a normal "rock" band - much more like watching a jazz ensemble or a band of buskers that happen to be really really good- no feedback, no rock posturing, just playing delicate tunes and letting them speak for themselves.

The whole album is fantastic- but standout tracks IMHO are 'Postcards from Italy'(heartbreaking trumpet playing), 'Scenic World' (the album version is played on what sounds like a stylophone- but is also on Lon Gisland EP with full band), 'Brandenburg' (a gypsy stomp with more than a touch of David Bryne about it) and the finale 'After the Curtain' (a simply hammered organ with vocals that bursts into another stylophone moment- complete with audience cheers sending shudders down your spine.)

Anyone else listening or see them?

I thought it was A Hawk And A Hacksaw that was ex-members of Neutral Milk Hotel?

As for Beirut, i have only heard one song but sounded like the worst kind of cultural tourism, 'ethnic' 'gypsy' sounding music with whining indie vocals. The genius thing about Gogol Bordello is the fact that they DONT do go the easy route of producing a facsimile of what we imagine gypsy music to be like, but throw in punk and a whole load of other shit into the mix to create something genuinely new and interesting.

Having said that, i cant really go off one about Beirut having heard so little, so i will endevour to hear some more.

Jeremy Barnes, AKA A Hawk And A Hacksaw, is in Beirut (or plays on the album, at least) and was indeed in Neutral Milk Hotel...

Yup its those same folk- although they're not perminent members of the band, from wikipedia...

The first official release under the Beirut name was assisted by Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw)..

Exactly- lets try and keep haterz to a minimum

i copped a copy of the album/ep combo in a swap for an issue of the lobster towards the end of last year.

i like it a lot, delicately touching and swirly psychedelic at the same time, with an andy kershaw vibe that's a bit of a new one on me. they were good on the glastonbury footage too. the drummer looks like what would come out if ron 'not malph or potsy' howard and art 'not simon' garfunkel got mashed-up by the teleporter from the fly.

i think beirut is ok, but i think it's also really typical that people are swooning over this and ignoring goran bregovich and fanfare ciocarlia and taraf de haidouks and other authentic gypsy music - beirut is kind of like, i dunno, the less than jake equivalent if real gypsy bands are the skatalites.

Who is ignoring? I don't know any of those bands mentioned but maybe you could suggest a link to their music, or start a thread on why you like them rather than moaning in this thread. What's wrong with having influences?
