Hey - so there's this coming up this weekend, and I want to go, and I've never heard of any of these bands because I'm a big dumbass.

Descriptions? Stage recommendations?

Is anyone else going?

I went the last couple of years I was in NY, but there's nothing that exciting about the lineup this year, so it doesn't feel worth the trip anymore, rumors that this is its final year notwithstanding. But it's a lot of fun, particularly if you either love Coney Island or otherwise just don't go often.

The set times are staggered and the two stages are close enough that, at least in theory, you can swap back and forth and see basically everything. But the stages start to get really packed at about 5 or so, so if you want to be anywhere near anything for either of the headliners, you'll have to pick a stage. The main stage has a speaker setup in the middle of the audience area, so getting there early isn't nearly as crucial.

There are pay toilets near the main stage, and if you're going to be there all day, it's the best 25c you can possibly spend. They're in one of the walkways between the two stages.

Most of all, everything sounds *terrible*. Be prepared to disregard any negative impressions of anything you see/hear, because it just won't be fair or accurate.

The Twilight Sad are very good. The singer has one of the strongest accents this side of Arab Strap and wants to be in a folk band. The rest of the band want to be shoegazers and strangely enough it works really well.
Have a quick listen.

Oh yeah, go and see the Twilight Sad. Saw them do a 'quiet' set the other week, would love to see them rock out proper. Also, they do a mean cover of Daniel Johnston's Some Things Last A Long Time.

Detroit Cobras are a female fronted Garage rock covers band. This quote from a fansite describes them quite well...

If Iggy Pop, Berry Gordy, and Jackie DeShannon fornicated in the back seat of a ’63 Thunderbird, the drunken, swaggering Detroit Cobras would slither from the orgiastic rendezvous.

They appeared around the same time as The White Stripes and i think released some stuff on their old label/ shared compilations with them etc.
I really liked their 'Life Love and Leaving' album- but have found their last couple of records a bit samey- however their version of Hey Sailor is pop genius.

Their version of Cha Cha Twist was also used in a Diet Coke ad- so you may know that?

i've never seen them live and i'm curious as to whether it works- so if you see em let us know what you think...

okay, review:

The Venue
bad - no shade, no seating, and the crowd was pretty eh...though they got more interesting and more interested as the bands moved along. everything got started about half an hour late but I guess that's kind of standard anyway - except in this case it made it harder to guess what was playing at which stage when.

good - free. also we were about 30 feet away from the Cyclone so every so often a pause would be filled with rumblerumbleAAAAAAAAAAHHH! and there were dragonflies zooming around the crowd.

The Twilight Sad
was great! you weren't kidding about the accent, I could barely understand the guy. also with all the reverb I had trouble making out many details of the guitarings. he seemed really into it, kind of progressive (? I'm shit at describing music), interesting music. I'd like to get more.

Dr. Dog
had a good time with these guys but they weren't especially memorable. seemed to have a good following in the crowd though. nice and mellow, straw hats, and the keyboard firmly locked at "electric organ". every time he spoke to the crowd he sounded like a fucking idiot. the kind of awkward jokes where everyone in the crowd squints and says "huh?"

The Noisettes
were fucking brilliant and I'm definitely looking for some. great range with both her vocals and the kinds of stuff they were playing. band guys seemed almost as weird as her. lotsa solos. she squeaked a lot and jumped around and there was tons of energy from everyone. seemed even more popular with the crowd - although a lot of the jerks who shoved past me to stand closer to the stage and go "yay!" seemed confused by the music about two songs later.

Unfortunately I am an old man and my knees were very tired of standing at this point (about 3 hours) so I took off. I wasn't able to see the Cobras despite several recommendations, sorry.
