This Sunday

There's no question as to whether or not I'll willingly witness the actual film, so instead, the question becomes: original songs, Chipmunk songs, or covers? I have a strange urge to hear The Chipmunks cover some Andrew W.K.

At least Nicolas Cage isn't involved.

No, hang on, doesn't that make it MORE threats we're dealing with?

FUCK.

Erm...

Dear Jason Lee:

Once you had a promising career. I did my best to aid it. But now...now you have conspired against me.

I'll make sure your freakishly named child pays for this.

Love,

Satan

Why do the chipmunks look as if they busted straight out of a Run-DMC video circa 1984? Is there anybody in the studio who knows anything about anything?

My childhood.

So violated.

As I sit, in my grey room.

In my grey house.

So grey. But at least here I am safe.

Safe, in my grey house.

Is it really that bad?

Really?

A cartoon we watched 10 years ago is being adapted to film.

Is it really that bad?

Really?

Really?

Why do you care?

Ten years ago? Christ, you're young. Hell, Alvin and the Chipmunks were preceded by "Captain Kangaroo" and "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie", but that's about it. I think BCE stands for "before chipmunk era"? Maybe I'd better look it up.

First it was the Flinstones, and that unsuspecting moose and squirrel just skated it, now these poor guys, and soon, very very soon, Huckleberry Hound will probably too be CGIed and come that closer to proportions of a real dog. Because that was the point, you understand. That ever-encroaching realism and sense of fashion that cries out to pretend twenty years haven't gone by and made parents and/or movie-making folks feel old. I never did understand why Yogi Bear never wore glowsticks while drinking a keg in a cornfield, or didn't look more like a real grizzly bear. I'd have found him funnier if he'd slobbered more and had big yellowing teeth of doom.

And why did I just wake up with visions of these guys singing that Beastie Boys parody Squirrels?

HERE I POSTED THIS AWHILE AGO:
I'm big on entertainment and how it is supposed to provide adequate escapism for the masses.

Unfortunately, I've found myself enjoying television, movies, and books less and less.

This started mostly with Spider-Man 3 (although I felt this way for awhile). That kinda was a punch in the stomach (I run a comic shop so I can't escape my dissapointment --- it's silly but I want to believe in all forms of art including comics).

But it's not so much the horrid storytelling that is getting to me. It's the acceptance of averageness. I read books, or watch films, and TV and I see the same repetition everywhere. Every crime film is about redemption, every rap video is a pissing contest, every TV show is promising an outcome soon but it never comes, every book I read is 70% good and then in the last 30% it goes to shit.

I want new ideas, I want new concepts, I want new ways of storytelling! I want someone to not write a story that doesn't follow a pre-set pyramid of how it is supposed to progress. I want a movie where the bad guys end up being likable and the good guys turn out to be the animals. I'm tired of Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Society. How about Soceity vs. Man? huh? How about a story where the aliens aren't more intelligent than us. A story where the dialouge isn't a Tarantino-rip off. A rock song that isn't about your self-obsession and angst. A movie where we lose World War 2? A horror film that isn't some cheap imitation of Hitchcockian subtlety but not a torture film? A TV show that doesn't overstay it's welcome for 2 extra seasons? An establish superhero who says "fuck it" and kills his arch-enemy instead of changing his mind at the last minute. A sci-fi story that isn't about the dangers of technology? A love story where love doesn't conquer all? A racially diverse story that doesn't force the concept of race down my throat?

I know people have done these things at some point in time but it's TOO FEW AND FAR BETWEEN ALL THE SACRED COWS!

I want something more. I want something different. I'm bored with the classic concepts and ideas.

All this cause of Spider-Man 3...

I didn't watch it. Irritating squeaky voices. Now irritating squeaky voices will be all over everywhere as horrible film is promoted. Am annoyed.

I will be very surprised if this film will unavoidably intrude on anyone's life to any great extent, unless any of you work as cinema projectionists or ushers.

This film will probably be shit. The cartoon on which it is based was shit. But I am sure the promotional material around the film and perhaps even a viewing of it would annoy me less than seeing yet another internet discussion in which people complain about a film based on a poster or a promotional photo or even a casting rumour. The only good thing about this thread is that it arguably sets a precedent for posting this kind of nonsense in the Conversation, rather than clogging up Film, TV & Theatre as it has for the last however many years.

Troy, when you posted your little rant before people took the time to offer recommendations and point out that perhaps - just perhaps - the apparent limitations you perceive in popular culture are more to do with the narrow scope of your own vision rather than anything else. Have you taken this on board and cast your net a little wider, or have you been too busy with maquette-related activities?

I like overreacting to minor irritations, it's fun. And going all RGGGH over stupid shit lets me be less RGGHH about important stuff when I need to be. Stop spoiling my fun.

My purpose when posting this thread was a combination of what Flyboy and TTS just said. I actually think the hip-hop styling on the 'munks makes them look quite cool. Having said that it's highly unlikely that they'll actually be black.

I actually was familiar with quite a bit of those things. My argument was that I wish to see more of it more often in my entertainment. I'm a man of substance. NOW, leave me be so I can fondle my porcelain MJ!

Thanks for the link, Chiropteran! That doesn´t seem to be too bad on first impression. It doesn´t look as if the design was changed much, either. I will be cautiously optimistic, that the Doctor can make his tv return gracefully without too much pandering to the lowest common denominator or something like that.
