So, anyone else miss episode 2 because of the BBC showing this twice a week?

Gripe aside - 1 and 3 have had some fun - M Anthony is coming alive, as one would expect, and James Purefoy seems to be really enjoying himself so far. Pullo is still the best thing in it by a long stretch, and Kevin McKidd's character isn't even registering as mildly interesting.

Okay, enough filler - who's watching?

Me. I'm watching. I'm thinking it's aces, too, and Pullo is definitely the one to watch. He's transformed from being the mindless thug to the wannabe diplomat, with a heart and conscience, who can still summon up some decent thuggery when required. Vorenus always was living off Pullo's graft, it would have been interesting to see what happened if there was a longer schism, but seems that's not to be, the way they're working the storyline.

I completely failed to register who the people were in the slave wagon the first time it was shown. I guess the sister-in-law and kids just weren't at all memorable as characters.

I really liked Octavian last time around. This time I'm tending to agree with Atia so far - he's a pompous twat.

I have coincidentally discovered and read all of Lindsay Davies' Falco series of private investigator novels, set in 1st century Rome in the time of Vespasian, in the break between series. I have to say that having a little more (albeit semi-fictional) knowledge of the times is sharpening my interest and enjoyment of this series.

Octavian has to make leap-and-bounds changes - I thought that I'd been misinformed when told that the younger actor was no longer interested in the role - but guessing that his move off screen and the moves forward with time over the last few episodes will see him return all growed up.

I quite enjoyed the fight between V and Pullo, had a real feel of two professional soldiers using training against each other.

I'm watching it again as was supplied with a disk with the full season. Thus I won't be commenting much outside of saying I really enjoyed it.

This season has been so much darker than the first. Last night's episode was pretty bleak, but did have Pullo doing another "Thirteeeeeeeen!"-esque moment.

This is probably the last season so it'd be nice if there was a slightly upbeat ending. Even if it's just Poska and his new wife (who I thought was Juliet Landau of BtVS fame, but isn't) having a pleasant meal or something.

I thought last night was a bit flat, to be honest. Bearing in mind how much I luvluvluvluvluv the programme, I thought that they tried to shoehorn a few too many plot developments into too short a space of time. Still the best thing on telly undoubtedly, but last night could've been done better if they'd had a few more episodes to play with.

Although obviously the ultra-violence was skill.

they certainly do seem to be rushing things with this series, don't they - although I did like the introduction of Livia and the mention of Tiberius. It does seem to be getting a bit...well, Caligula really.
