So, it was a stormy morning, rain beating against the windows. Lightning forcerd me to turn my computer off for the first time in a scarily long period. Everyone was out and i had nothing planned for my day off.
So i made a large jug of coffee and settled down to watch Jandek On Corwood, the documentary on Jandek.

Jandek On Corwood

This was a well made documentary and i'm a sucker for music documentaries so i really enjoyed it. Also being a fan of Jandek helped.

For those unfamiliar with Jandek check out the great site made by a fan:

Jandek

Basically, Jandek is the name by which a musician has been known for thirty years. Releasing 50 albums during this period and only recently appearing live for a handful of dates.

Jandek is probably a man known as Sterling Smith and is also often described purely as a representative from Corwood. Corwood is the buisness that releases Jandek's material and handles the artist. It would appear that Corwood has only one artist who also runs it.

This is mostly speculation as he has only ever done two(?) interviews where he did not give much away.

His records are available in independent record shops and direct from Corwood Industries at the same address it has had since the first Jandek record (then he was known as The Units) was released.

P.O. Box 15375, Houston TX 77220

If there is anyone else who likes Jandek, anyone who is interested in finding out more or anyone who has seen the film i will continue posting and actually talk about the music , which is amazing.

I was curious though how people felt about this type of myth surrouding a musician and if you felt it helped the music or was detrimental.

I find the link between the music and the biography very intersting.

I will come back to this later when I'm not so crazy busy, but in short: kudos for starting a thread on Jandek -- I used to (and still do, I guess) love his work, but haven't thought about it much for a few years now. There's a LOT of stuff about Jandek, the crossover with/exploitation of "outsider" music, whether his approach is viable in the Internet age (one of the most monumentally impressive things about Jandek is the labour it took to PRODUCE this essentially anonymous work over decades, while "publishing" can now be done in two mouse clicks) and... well, lots.

Hopefully somebody else who is clever and likes or hates Jandek will pick up my slack, but thanks for now for getting this ball rolling.

I'll give this to Jandek: He has put out quite a few albums in his time.

But seriously... "So, I hear the turkey is rising in your bloodstream," um... wtf?

A lot of Jandek's lyrics have the feeling of a stream of consciousness and therefore do not always make 100% literal sense. Also it's a bit of a backhanded compliment to say that he's released a lot of albums - Cliff Richard has released a lot of albums but i'd rather have a 3 second snippet of Jandek rather than 1000 Cliff Richard albums.

Saw him last night at the Nave in London and he was extraodinary. Played for a little over two hours with a bassist and a drummer. Surprisingly heavy set.
Incredible performance!
