Simian Mobile Disco, Justice, Spank Rock, their relations, and quite probably Fluokids and Kitsune Maison as well

So, there's splinter group from old band Simian called Simian Mobile Disco who make a super fun bass and electro racket with such songs as It's the beat (dip dip dip-di-diddy-dip), and who are also jolly fun live as my sweaty, MDMA'd up Flickr page will show you.

They're also famous for having their song Never Be Alone (U'll! Never! Be aloooone again) remixed by Justice, another super band who do a similar sort of bass and fierce electro thing, though more mechanical and less organic than SMD if at times capable of more intensity.

And whaddayou know - Justice have also got a remix of Spank Rock's Bump, called Thunderous Bumps, which was superb to start off with and which remix has the honour of being basically a mash-up of Justice and Spank Rock, together, snuggling, at a sexy party.

Now we could enthuse about the above. That's a large part of what this thread is for. We'll also talk about the excellent blog Fluokids, which is where I came across a lot of this stuff in the first place. If you excuse for a moment Fluokids penchant for putting up pictures of "hott girls", which does sometimes spill into dodgy territory, it's probably one of the best music blogs out there in terms of being engaging, brightly coloured and on the ball without being exclusive (apart from being in French and the unfortunate "Look, a girl" parts.)

Some of the people related to Fluokids also release the Kitsune Maison compilations, which tend to be super despite the odd Wolfmother remix.

All this stands up very well against the Klaxons et al, and I guess I'd like you to all enthuse about it - or cast doubt on it if you'd rather.

Hey i thought Kitsune was affiliated with Klaxons!
I'm getting lost:
What exactly is nu-rave?
As far as i know, Klaxons, Crystal Castle, the Gossip are nu-rave but they don't have a lot in comon (I love them, by the way-no, hang on, the Klaxons album was kinda disappointing)
I tend to think that originally nu-rave is just your average NME indie band editing their shit so hard that they sound almost all the same (shitdisco? new young pony club?Envelopes? It doesn't mean i don't dig it but...)Correct?
In France we got the Edbanger crew (Justice, DJ Medhi, Sebastian, Mr Oizo) which is almost unhealthily hypped to death, giving way to a new club scene based around heavily compressed hard rock/funky house music tunes-as James Murphy puts it: Playin' Daft Punk/to the rock kids- some of them are ace, but the bandwaggoning process's on it's way.
Is that nu-rave?
Are !!! nu-rave?
Lost, lost, lost!
Post-modern, init?
Let's dance!

Well, Nu Rave is dubious. It's something some NME journalists made up, and rave about, but it also might be something that people are actively deciding to claim and work in. I wouldn't want to write it off yet for that reason, in case somebody interesting comes along in that "genre"/"brand", whatever. I
I don't think Crystal Castles or the Gossip count as Nu Rave, although as an arbitrary genre it's hard to tell. Both of those bands are wonderful, of course.

Setting Simian Mobile Disco against Klaxons is a false dichotomy, as James Ford of the former produced the latter's album. And the Arctic Monkeys' latest.

Point, but they sound more interesting, no?

I haven't actually heard any SMD, I admit... I spoke to James a while back (nice bloke etc) and made a mental note to try and hear some but my mental filing system is obviously a bit fucked. I'll have a look for some of their stuff tonight. Ten years ago I was all about dance music. Since getting bored with it I find it's an effort to listen to any. The album's reviews, or those of them I've read, form a rough consensus of great tracks, grating album.

And I now appear to be singing We! Are! Your Friends! You'll! Never Be Alone Again! as I finish my week's work...

"We are your friends" is one of theirs? That is the creepiest song I've ever heard on the radio.

*Brrr*

Their former identity as Simian, a band which formed in Manchester and split in an argument in a texas fish restaurant. SMD was the alias used for DJ gigs and has gone on to become a band. The song in question was remixed by Justice as their entry to a remix competition, I think, and only released when popular in the clubs.

It should be renamed RSS-House or Blog-House.
