Mmm, Roerich. I dug up that site a couple of years ago: have used some of the pictures as backgrounds on and off.

I particularly like the scenes that are almost devoid of people: there's a wonderful give between the guy's quasi-realism and the almost Group Of Seven-like colouring and stuff.

(Which reminds me: anyone who can get me Group Of 7 postcards will forever rock.)

The Group Of Seven were a group of Canadian artists who got together in the early 1900s. You can buy some stuff here - it's a site that's got histories and print sales and such. Nice site.

Personally, I think Lawren Harris' stuff is awesome. Same sort of feel as some of Roerich's stuff, in a big way.

More history here.

But don't ask me - ask wembley. Ze can tell you much more. As can most BarbeCanucks, I'm betting.

surely someone from toronto could pick 'em up from the royal ontario museum? wembley, betty woo, zoom or moriarty?

hmm...actually, come to think of it, there might not have been any decent postcards to pick up, or i would've brought some home myself...

they do have some fabulously weird lighting/colouring going on, don't they?

I think that's the way: I was at the gallery when I was last in TO, and their range of merchandise didn't seem to be that large, alas. Fuh.

But yet - I love the colours. They're fantastically.. well, y'know. Evocative. Eerie.
