New York Asian Film Festival

Not to be a shill, but I'm one of the losers who runs the New York Asian Film Festival (June 22 - July 8 in, where else, New York). We just announced our line-up and schedule and you can see them over here.

Besides eating my life, the festival's actually a fun place to see brand new Asian pop madness, a little bit of which is:

THE BANQUET - a martial arts version of Hamlet

HELL'S GROUND - Pakistan's first splatter film

AACHI & SSIPAK - totally offensive Korean animated sci fi flick that looks like Bakshi on meth with some eye-popping action including a version of the mine car chase from INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM that cranks the meters into the red until they start to smoke.

BIG BANG LOVE, JUVENILE A - Takashi Miike's gay prison love story...based on a manga and with rocketships.

ZEBRAMAN - an ode to superhero fandom

The DEATH NOTE movies.

NEVER BELONGS TO ME - featuring an assassin with a gun for a penis that can only shoot bullets when he sees ballet dancers.

MEMORIES OF MATSUKO - a musical about a dead bag lady.

DASEPO NAUGHTY GIRLS - a pro-prostitution musical about teenagers fucking like rabbits when they're not defeating mythical monsters with team masturbation.

And more...

Not trying to be a shill but I thought folks might enjoy the write-ups if nothing else. Just click on the big picture to get into the site.

I'm planning to see "Dasepo Naughty Girls" and "I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK" on the opening weekend. I'd love to see "Yo Yo Girl Cop" but there's no way I'm treking into the city on the 4th of July.

I'll hopefully get to I'm a Cyborg, Big Bang Love, Nightmare Detective and the new one from the director Kamikaze Girls, which I forgot the title of. I have to say, whoever puts together the pamphlet that detials the film schedule is one of the most persuasive writers around. Reading that, I always want to see every single film they're showing.

Hey - that's me! Thanks for the compliments! I didn't know anyone from Barbelith came to the festival. Cool! You can live without seeing YO YO GIRL COP (it's fun, but fun in a trashy way that makes you feel dirty afterwards). But don't miss MEMORIES OF MATSUKO (the one from the director of KAMIKAZE GIRLS). Absolutely the best movie of 2006. I don't want to over-sell it, but this is the kind of movie that causes you to drop your critical faculties and it makes you a believer.

You little tinker. Don't you realise how very tempting this sounds?

I'd like to see this pamphlet of Grady's now. And having Googled some of the film titles I'm quite sad about not being within a continent's width of NYC.

I have to agree with Transfer. You're just making me want it more!

Taste a little bit of sleazy with this trailer from YO-YO GIRL COP but action freaks shouldn't miss AACHI & SSIPAK. Check out the first 5 minutes of it. And there's tons of grimy action in DOG BITE DOG as well (see the teaser trailer).

But if you want to see why Shinya Tsukamoto should direct the SANDMAN movie, check out the trailer for NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE - the movie is a psychedelic freak show about a guy like Dream who can enter dreams and resolve issues there, but it's much darker and much more funky.

And the MEMORIES OF MATSUKO trailer is pretty stunning.

But I can't get over just how gorgeous Takashi Miike's gay love story, BIG BANG LOVE, JUVENILE A, is. Jailhouse romance the way it should be. Check out the trailer.

Grady gets some props from The New York Times. Right now, I'm planning to see at least three or four films, and hopefully I'll be able to get some more in as well.
