Air.
It's really silly, I know, but well, there's a whole goddammed lot of it, it's all over the place, and has fantastic properties, including the whole breathing thing; the fact there's a whole bunch of it sitting on top of you and weighing you down all the time but you don't notice it all the time; the omnipresent push/pull quality, where it seems quite passive and relenting but then it can knock you on your ass; brings smells and sounds to you from way far away or directs them in sharp turns away from you; makes the moon get bigger or smaller (I know it just looks that way, but from a looking standpoint, same diff). And you can't hold it very well, but you can't help but hold it soon as you cup your hand and don't fill it with something else. Corruptive bits kept in check to keep it useful to us, the whole atmospheric filtration thing, there's virtually no end to my love of air.
It holds and drops rain, gets lightning going, knocks leaves off trees for me to see, generates lovely clouds, makes waves of grass and flowers, gives the birds and bats somewhere to do the whole wingbeat thing... |
