Crystal Castles (proper thread)

Here's their internet home.

Here's the link to my original, post-gig, happily pissed thread: drinks, arguments, some kitteh, photographs, Tony Wilson.

That thread was silly. This one is more about the actual music. There are various points we might pick up on in that thread, which I'm going to list here.

1) Me, asked if they were electro goodness:

Yes, yes. Kind of in the box with Justice/Spank Rock/Simian Mobile Disco ete, if you like that schtoof (you should).

See, I can really appreciate the great hair/untouchable coolness thing IF it's married to something quite new and exciting and not just sub-sub-Oasis drivel dirge. Libs etc = Oh wow, your jackets too small, your spending daddy's money on smack, wow. Whereas CC et al = Wow! There's been more keyboards and less guitars around MCR recently, so I've been a happy chap.

Feel free to pull any of that apart.

2) We talked about the blog 20 Jazz Funk Greats.

3) Flyboy said:

I honestly don't know if I like Hadouken, much in the same way Jez didn't know on Peep Show whether he had to take a bite of dead dog.

I know that I like My Chemical Romance, though.

Ex-Legba, why don't you start a Crystal Castles thread in the Music forum? Or I could just move this one there; I hardly think it's worth being fussy in times like these.

And then:

'Kick Out The Jams' is my favourite MCR song.

4) Later I said:

I will start a new CC thread in music, and we might have it involve other related stuff as well (as I think they probably function by reference to some sort of micro-scene thing, although I don't know).

So there we go. You lot start, I'll be back in a bit.

They're fucking good!

I just saw them three hours ago in Cardiff, where they performed a short, intense, ecstatically received set. The MP3's I've heard till now don't do them justice (or Justice).

Is there something they put in the water in Toronto that causes the women from there to look totally bewitching under a high intensity strobe light?

I've revived this thread only to sink it under already. Apologies, Allecto.

Fuck! They're playing up here next week?

Ticketsticketstickets!

Oh aye, I really like Crystal Castles thanks to AR's enthusing, though I haven't actually mentioned it before.

They've got a good Liars remix floating around the web as well. I like the sound on record but their live thing is really something super.

Hmmm, think the original Liars tune knocks the shit out of the Remix, personally. But their Health remix... 80's computer sadness.

Y'know, this thread is missing three important words: Atari. Teenage. Riot. As in 'Crystal Castles often sound like Atari. Teenage. Riot' They even use an Atari 5200 sound chip. And shout.
They're exactly what I want to hear right now (and coming out of the offputtingly trendy and hopefully fleeting 'nu-rave' 'scene' that's a bloody surprise). Ta to Allecto for bringing them to my attention.

Wheee! Tickets booked and I'm off out tomorrow night to see them!

I've been mad on chip stuff for a good while now in the form of old videogame music, though with bands like CC it seems to really be bubbling up inot the mainstream. It makes me think of punk in a lot of ways, the sort of music you really can't understand unless you're of a certain generation. It pretty much demands certain formative experiences in its audience to provide the in.

That Health mix is fantastic, but I've not gotten to the Liars one yet.

When's the album out?

This is often the way it happens: something that seems or is regarded as annoyingly ephemeral/trendy/vaccuous often actually has that element of fun/sex/noise/cross-pollenization that rejuvenates an otherwise tired idea - I mean, in some ways you could reasonably put Crystal Castles/Vitalic/Simian Mobile Disco in the same box as Ministry or Nine Inch Nails, but I know I would never class them together because Ministry and NIN look so boring in comparison.

It doesn't always work like this, of course - Screamo and most of Indie have utterly failed to get me interested in boys with guitars, and just seem annoying and vaccuous in a joyless way. Unlike The Gossip, who of course self-identified "guitar people" generally hate.

Yay, my first post in Music!

I really like this. Squibbly dancy happy/sad music that does things to my inner ear. Grooving to their Myspace player at work right now.

Excellent.

Funny. It seems Health were playing at The 13th Note, round the corner from where CC were meant to be playing, when CC were meant to be playing.

So they've stolen a whole bunch of chip music and the original cover to their album and they haven't credited anybody, anywhere at all. Jerks. Trendy, sexy jerks.

And their album is very, very boring.
