Things to do in Brighton next week?

My unions yearly conference finds me spending next week in Brighton, and while I'll be busy during the day I imagine the evenings will quite possible find me at something of a loose end, and I was wondering if anyone could propose anything I really should be doing while I there, since it really would be a waste to spend every evening in a town far more interesting than the one in which I live sitting in my hotel room staring out the window, suffering severe withdrawal from my computer. I have a passing familiarity with day time Brighton, but as far as the evenings go my experience of the town is extremely limited. So any suggestions will be gratefully considered and possibly acted upon. I'm perhaps most interested in the idea of any really good gigs that might be happening next week in Brighton, but as I say, really any suggestions beat sitting around till bedtime every night.

Sorry, not an expert on weeknight ents anymore. Don't get to go out much these days.

However, the Festival is on so perhaps you should check this out

Cinema's right next door to the conference centre, too.

Oh, and you could well be interested in this place if you like more grown up movies

You might also want to check out our famous Laines (North Laines like to think they're all Boho, South are posh and expensive and less trendy). You'll also find lots of nice pubs, clubs, restaurants and stuff thereabouts.

You're spoilt for choice at festival time. It's a shame you weren't here for last night's Bob Dylan tribute night, it was rocking.
What do you like doing?

Buy a football and loads of alcohol > drink alcohol > chipshop > get on the beach > stagger around for around an hour with football until you can barely walk anymore, it's pitch black, and you can't see a damn thing, then > kick the football at someones window > fall on floor > get back on feet > sing loudly with last can in hand > stagger to nearest nightclub!

sorry.

There's usually something good at the Komedia. Check out brighton.co.uk for mainstream ents, or else persuade local board folk to come out for a pint. You may find some of us lurking at The Heart In Hand from time to time.

See that disability carriage outside the pub? That belongs to a local character who spends his time pubcrawling around Brighton every day, an old guy whose name I don't know but who must be the most regular regular in town. Lord Nuneaton Savage might know his name actually, I must remember to ask him...

...and all these places are spitting distance from each other, the station, the sea and the cool shops.

If you go a bit out of central then these are my locals;

Park Crescent

Hey, why don't you try and herd the locals into a Barbelmeet at one of these fine ale emporia?

Cheers for the suggestions. As to what I like - I'm kinda random, some times I like crazy clubbing and heavy drinking, other times not so much. At the moment my geek side seems to be ascendant - I'm all about not doing much and watching sci-fi lately, but that probably needs to change. I'll have a read throught those links and check things out in more detail tomorrow - for today my thoughts of Brighton have become a little tainted with headsick so I'd probably rather sleep before thinking too much more about the excursion. Still I think this guarantees that I shall be drinking extremely heavily somewhere on Wednesday......

Sounds like an exquisite combination. Still I have to be careful with Dave's lovely 50p bins. What with having a weeks worth of clothes and stuff to take home, 50+ eighties DC comic books in addition might kill me. And I still haven't read all the old stuff I picked up there last time I was in Brighton......

I think that local chap with the wheely-chair is called Ray, or something. he's an old scottish chap with a quiff and a penchant for getting out inappropriate photos of his thai-bride. seriously, its not pretty. He makes a point of leaving his walking stick in the photos, to prove he was there....

But yes, all good suggestions. I dont live in sunny brighton anymore, but can also recommend the Trafalgar, just up from the station, where they have a nice fire for the winter, and a nice garden for the summer. Oh, and beer and stuff too.

Quants, YOU DRINK AT THE EAGLE?

Good God man, the Park Crescent was once my second home, the Heart in Hand is a nice, fun pub with some added character thrown in for good measure, the Basket Makers just teh rools. THE EAGLE, HOWEVER, IS FOR CHILDREN. NOISY CHILDREN WHO LIKE TO SHOUT OVER VERY LOUD DULL MUSIC.

SHOUTING! LIKE ME! IN THIS POST!

Utter plubbage.

(They did nice pizzas once upon a time, though)

Oh God, Joe, I'd forgotten all about that. It wasn't the photos I had a problem with, it was the leering pride in his eyes.

Brrrrrr.

Eagle? Our house was through the little alley next to it, about twenty metres away so in summer when the makers was spilling into the street we have sat outside on a bench, yes. I can't say I've ever been *inside*, because as you rightly say it's shit.
Ray's thai bride must be pretty bored, he's never in. We live opposite the Martha Gunn now, and he's always there when he's not at the Heart, or several other pubs..

Oh god, the Martha Gunn, that's a local and a half.

Joe means the Battle of Trafalgar I think, just up from the station. A fine pub, great garden.

This has become a 'Brighton Pub Guide' thread rather, eh.

That would seem to be entirely on-topic as far as I'm concerned.

Aye. The Druids is great too (Arms, not Head) and the George is great if you're veggie. Lion & Lobster is brilliant and near the beach.

Has anyone been to the Robin Hood?

robin hood's okay, and all the takings go to charity, but it's just a teeny bit bar-y. might as well go to the lion and lobster if you're round there, my current favourite brighton pub.

has anyone been to the bow street runners off western road? i'm sure a year ago it was derelict, and half believe it's derelict still, that whenever i see the light on the sign i'm actually looking fifty years into the past*. great name for a pub.

*i'm a bit like rodney, except only when he wasn't rodney any more? I'm sure you know what i mean.

The Bow is a corking boozer. I used to live just round the corner and would drink there all the time. It's small, full of regulars, with no TV screen and a *ahem* theatrical atmosphere. It rules.

Oh. Yes, i did mean the Battle Of Trafalgar. well spotted. I would like to throw the Great Eastern into the ring also. Good staff, nice old woody feel to the place (with a great big bloody bookcase along one whole wall) and a good selection of whiskeys. Sunday roasts are spot on also.

What for? To see if you can shout louder than the loud bad rock music? To experience the Australian "theme"?

Great Eastern is directly opposite the George, both on Trafalgar street. The Cobbler's is on the wrong side of the tracks in an industrial wasteland which is busy being gentrified, and is often full of my workmates as we can see it from our building, the delightful New England House;

(NEH)"is probably the ugliest building in town. One of the many advantages of having premises within its walls is that you can no longer see it when your in your office."

Yes, but in the dead of night, down the long empty cold concrete corridors wafts the smell of freshly baked bread, from the bakery therein.

How about the Barlow Mow, not sure on the road it's on but it's up towards Kemp Town. I went in there alot when my partner and I spent a long weekend in Brighton. There is a lot to be said for a pub which serves old fashion sweets as well as crisps, dib dab's go wonderfully with wine!

And they do really good food as well.

I'm often tormented as I leave at 9pm, hungry, by the delicious aroma of baking garlic bread. Mmmm...

Anyway, Shiny Things, other Local People, shall we meet for a beverage tomorrow? How about tomorrow evening in the Basketmakers at the Dad-friendly time of 5:30?
