Right. So.

Hmm. A while ago, I asked a question. But, as happens, it was swept up and forgotten. So, thought I, what shall I do? And lo, the clouds parted, and the answer was revealed to me in the form of kabbalistic interpretative dance.*

Barbelith has already had a few threads of this sort; Florida, for instance, or Ireland. There are also a multitude of threads on travelling per se. But these seem to be in conversation, and have a distinctly variable half-life. So what if, I was thinking, there was a slightly more permanent Travelling thread that could be utilised for any questions, from the fleeting to the in-depth? Some might prefer starting new threads to ask about destinations, while others may just want quiet advice.

And so, the idea of this thread is that people can drop in and out, asking questions no matter how long or tall about destinations, and hopefully there will be lithers there or who have been there who will be able to proffer advice to calm the anxious and help out.

I hope this sounds like a good idea.

For my tuppence, I would like to ask about New York. A Friend and I are travelling there at the end of September, and while we have flights sorted out, ze and I are starting to get concerned about accommadation.

We're considering hostels or, possibly, very cheap hotels, but are not sure where to start. I'll be researching the travel guides and The Rest Of The Internet, but can anyone offer that most valuable thing, local knowledge?

*Not strictly true.

For a good hostel, I recommend the Chelsea Star Hostel. It's right in the middle of midtown, and quite nice as far as hostels go.

Last time I was in NYC (last month), I went for price over niceness, and stayed at the Continental Hostel. It's up on West 95th, is sort of scuzzy, and the elevator's broke, so you might have to walk up 7 floors, BUT it IS cheap!

This is a great thread idea. I have nothing to add about New York, having only ever been there staying with friends, unfortunately, but here's hoping Baz's suggestions are a help.

Any tips about where's good to go, and what's good to do, over a long weekend based in Reykjavik?

Extra points given for bar/club recommendations - we'll be arriving in the land of the sagas at around about midnight, and may be in need of sustenance.

Can anyone tell me what things I have to do before travelling to India (which is a possible summer destination). I'm thinking specifically stuff like:
a) shots
b) visas
c) passporty stuff
d) packing

Where in India will you be going? That's the thing that'll vary your "shots" requirements.

India requires a visa for US citizens to visit (though Sri Lanka doesn't). It takes about two weeks to come through. I think it's the same for UK citizens -- there was a Welsh fellow in line with us at the consulate in Sri Lanka.

I notice long queues every morning outside India House at Aldwych, which leads me to believe that a visa would be required...

Ah - here we go,

All foreign nationals, including children, require a visa to enter India.

The general requirements for visas are:

Original passport valid for at least six months
Correct visa fee
Two Recent passport-size photographs (five photographs in case of Pakistani nationals)
Supporting documents, where necessary

Tourist Visa
Fee £30.00, this is a short duration visa for the purpose of holiday or visiting relatives.

I believe Tourist visas may also be available from travel agents that frequently deal with
India.

Cheers all, good to know. I think it's Pondicherry, or possibly Mumbai.

Well, being an Arts student is a good start if you don't want to be lonely and bored to death. Arts student have the best parties.

In other news: I'm off to Paris tomorrow, for four days. Things to do and see? Recommendations of sights, bars, restaurants etc.?

Paris? The most exotic thing I've done there is make a phone call from the Metro. Is in fact doable.

My reccomendation for Paris is to walk everywhere. That's what I did when I was there for three days and it ruled - there seems to be a never ending supply of interesting stuff to see. The Left Bank's pretty darned cool. Oh, and if you go to a strip club whatever you do don't buy any of the dancers a drink. They've got this con going where they charge you ten Euros to get into a club which includes a free drink, then when you get in they send the dancers over to try and get you to buy em drinks. If you say "yes" they come back with a cocktail which costs about a million Euros and you have to pay it. My friend was so insulted that he turned down the free lapdance they offered him when he got offended.......

The Catacombs! Probably the creepiest thing you'll ever see... just millions of bones 8 feet high and going back as far as you can see, with lovely skeleton art on the walls. Check it out!

Anyone have any advice regarding San Francisco? I'm going there on Saturday for 2 weeks for a training course and was curious if there were any Barbelith people in the area? Or if not some people that have visited at least? Any tips on nice veggie restaurants or bars that have to be checked out?

You could try some of the nice people in this thread.

I haven't been to San Fran for a decade, though, but I'll see if I can dig up anything.
