So, this has been out since, what, about six months now? And no thread? Ok, let's fix that...
Well, really, this wasn't one of my favourite efforts by Beck. The first half it's pretty good, from "Elevator Music" to around "Nausea", it has some really interesting and fun sounds (altrough I dunno about choosing "Nausea" as the main single, not because its bad, in fact its one of my favourite track from the cd, but because it doesn't really represent the sound of the rest of the record, being the most acoustic-sounding track by far); but the second half just spirals down. "1000 BPM" tests my patience, "The Information" and "Motorcade" are too repetitive, And "The Horrible Fanfare / Landslide / Exoskeleton" just frustrates me; there's bits of that (really long) track that could have been made into good songs (I mean, the bits that AREN'T taken from other songs in the record) but they weren't, and, as interesting as it may be, I don't want to hear Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers having a long talk in the middle of the music.
Also, this one hasn't a definite "flavor" as most Beck records (you know, Odelay = Weird Country/Hip Hop mix, Midnite Vultures = Kinda Horny Soul sound, etc) but, simultaneously, it is also more homogeneous, has less changes throughout the songs than his previous cds did.
The DVD its interesting, but not THAT interesting (altrough the one for "1000 BPM" really made me laugh).
Still, I love the cd, I really do, its just that I expected more. Also: It's very possible that I'll change my mind. And, it was a great idea to be able to make your own cd cover with the stickers. |
