Trying to look clever in a seminar and reference something that I've completely bloody forgotten. Here's what I remember:

They're a forest/jungle dwelling people, who consider children and pigs to be essentially the same. Both are suckled and doted over and mourned for in death equally.

This changes when the children go through a classic rite of passage - the men of the village, wearing masks, run in and violently kidnap the children of a certain age, drag them out to a hut in the forest, tell them they're dead, and then teach them the chants and history of the tribe, before the children return to take part in the sacrifice of pigs.

I'm pretty sure the name of the tribe begins with an O. Any idea, anyone?

Oddly enough, that's exactly what happened to me at my 30th birthday pub crawl.

Being a sometime anthropology student m'self, I haven't heard of these people. I'd like to know when you come across the reference. At the moment it sounds very 19th century ethnography.

I just ran 'children' 'pigs' and 'coming of age' through JSTOR (a big academic folklore and anthropology archive of articles) and I am now better informed, but still mystified on your specific request. Sorry.

Your JSTOR sounds really exciting. I am envious.

Give a student a can of beans for their access code.

***DISCLAIMER: JSTOR and other databases have, like, really strict BUT FAIR copyright and stuff, and I would never suggest that you should try to circumvent their licensing agreements. I work in a library! More than my job's worth! Xander and Spike are property of Mutant Enemy and Joss Whedon and I am not making any financial gain from this - oh, sorry! Wrong disclaimer***

Yes, and thanks for finding it!

but DAMN is that ever a bizarre effort, not at anthropology, but at a sensational cultural travelogue. It's so colonialist that I'm having trouble believing the writer could be correct in interpreting very much about the people's lives. And this person has written a book, apparently.

Would that be his book Tom-Toms of Time? Yikes. I'm also pretty appalled by that website and quite dubious of the interpretations being offered there.
