Simon Fraser, co-creator of 2000 A.D. strip The Adventures of Nikolai Dante and artist of Lux and Alby sign on and save the universe, is currently writing and drawing a new sci-fi serial. New pages of Lilly Mackenzie are added roughly once a week and whilst there's not much yet what there is makes for a nice, but not perfect, start.
Lilly is intended to be a new adventure heroine with plenty of stories planned for the future. Whether they'll ever be seen, whether the character will grow from the stereotypical babe she begins as will become clear time passes.
From what I've seen so far Fraser is putting a lot of thought into Lillys world, to the tech and the space ships whilst keeping it down to Earth and relatable via the fashions people sport. Lillys relationship with her best friend is getting plenty of attention which means he's either in for the long haul or going to die a significant death. The art is even better than the work he's been putting into Dante since his return to the strip, and that's been some of his best. I guess being personally invested in the strip, and having complete control makes a difference.
There's something quite retro about the strip, that reminds me of John Wyndhams space novels, a mixture of far reaching ambition and achievement combined with attention to details like nuts and bolts and the absence of perfect noble Star Trek type future people.
As I understand it the intention is to collect it for publication in the Euro format so I expect the story to be 64 or so pages long and we're about a fifth of the way there.
The link is here and I'd be interested to hear what people think about it because at the moment it's sort of below radar level and I've not read much on-line reaction. |
