I've got to stand up in front of the class an do a 15 min talk on 'The Digital Image', computer aided design an all that. Thing is, I know fuck all, in fact I know less than fuck all, so I'm up shit creak.
Maybe I should take a glance at 'The Designers Republic', or something along those lines. Any sugestions? Know of any good webshites? A point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

i did write a lengthy reply to your plea for help, but i got sidetracked and fucked up and lost it all completely. now it's late and i can't be arsed writing it all again. sorry.

here was the jist anyway:

digital art is a massive topic that u could never hope to dent in 15 minutes. so find a focus, something that you are genuinely interested in and research that.

maybe choose an artist or design team. look at what they do, then ask yourself some questions.

what do they do?
who do they do it for?
why do they choose to use digital?
what benefits does digital have over other mediums?
and on and on.
each question will inevitably lead onto another.

if you keep posting, i'll keep helping.

a good internationally renowned digital artist is mariko mori.

alternatively, you could have alook at how the digital format has effected aparticular industry within the arts. film being the obvious choice - then maybe you could focus on 'dogme 95' or something.

04.org.jp has an awesome link section, that covers a wide selection of digital design.

Designers Repubic is very nice.

Also you might try macromedia and look at their site of the day bit.

Just throw out words like "juxtapose" and "postmodern" and confuse the class into submission.

You can talk about lots of stuff...

If it's more current, you can talk about it's impact with the coming of age of the internet and even heavyweight museums giving it a look...such as the Whitney and the Guggenheim as recent examples. How it's opened up avenues of expression not only for current artists and designers, but for all people who want to spend a little time learning some of the basics...

The digital image also brings up topics of authenticity since everyone can dl a file and own a copy of it vs. how there's oftentimes only one of a kind of many types of art.

Also how technology plays a significant role of integrating current artistic expression through more intuitive devices. From an original BASIC program like "Logo" to make vector art, to photo manipulation with something like the current version of Photoshop, to making the image move and using video and sound as forms of expression, narrative, etc. From keyboards, mice, graphics tablets and so on...

Tech can also be a self referential art subject where even virii and hacking play a part...

You can be very general and still not cover everything...

...also...something interesting is "printing" out 3D objects that were created in a CAD/CAM program and given an actual physical representation or model. Basically, how the lines of a virtual workspace and that of the real are very much being blurred...

Hope this helps...

Regarding the issue of reproduction and multiple copies that netbanshee mentions, you might like to check out an online gallery or two.

A good example is PodGallery which produces high quality prints of original artworks on demand, at far lower prices than you would pay for a unique original piece. You could use it to spark a debate about the gallery system, elitism etc (what PodGallery aims to do is 'democratise' the buying process, so that buying art will be more like buying a book or a CD). There's a manifesto here.

There's a whole comic art section, btw.
