David Hockney lays out an interesting and plausible theory about the rise of perspective drawing in the renaissance:

Guardian Unlimited

If his supposition is correct and the old masters traced the proejctions of lenses to create their incredible work, does that lessen its impact?

...in art school, I knew plenty of people who would project drawings onto canvas so they can utilize they're sketches. Made sense if you could ask me.

Also...if they were trying to understand perspective, which was a fairly new concept back in those days, it would be good to have reference. Reminds me of a drawing class we had where our prof ran string across the whole room over our drawing paper to make a horizon line and then showed us some techniques to capture perspective even better. He even showed us earlier methods that weren't exactly perfect, but offered the line of thinking utilized at different points in history.

Prior to perspective drawing and painting, everything was more isometric and showed the difficulty in understanding the representation of space. Studying through reference and simulation is what one has to do first before the logic behind it is understood.

Nevertheless...everyone has been fascinated by the final outcome more than the process. If anything, it shows how much more resourceful these great thinkers are...
