There's obviously a reason they've chosen Madonna, and that reason probably says something about the way the judges wish the Turner prize to be seen by The Great British Public. And since the Turner Prize is a big regular event in the world of British Art, then you might say that it says something about
A) the way they wish people to view British art as a whole
and
B) the mindset of those people responsible for promoting British art
I only say 'may', they probably just wanted a big name to keep the papers interested. But might that hint at desperation? Maybe it's an indication of how difficult it is to keep people interested in visual art? There's all kinds of stuff you can surmise from this, so - yes - it's a perfectly valid question to ask.
Personally, I hate Madge both as artist and celebrity, and hate it when pop stars get involved in *cough* 'the serious arts', but I will probably hate the majority of artists selected, so, um, I dunno.
