I'll begin with 'The Madcap Laughs' by Syd Barrett.
From the way one is often looked at for listening to this, it may as well be called 'The Madcap Sets Fire To A Primary School, And Then Drives Home, Via The Off-Licence' - it's no use asking people to sit down and try and make friends with Syd's art, if they're reasonably sure that a lot of it's material one might have recorded oneself, while drunk, stoned, and at college. It's hard to explain how on the one hand easy, but on the other, impossible, that would be.
'Songs About Fucking' by Big Black. More an album for the funeral than the wedding, really; it's not about carrying on against the odds, it's more about the other thing, but still, I think, bracing in its nihilism. Again, I've been asked to please not to listen to this if there's anyone else around.
Anyway, Barbelith, over to you. |
