Art and the computer

Since about 10 years ago (when I started college) I was exposed to the computer as an art tool. I used to be an artist. The pc revolution has sucked out my soul. I find that I cant create shit anymore (or rather I can only create shit). Im not creative in front of the computer and when im creating my art away from the computer I find that im obsessing about getting it perfect to the extreems that I can no longer function artistically. So im wondering if anyone else has noticed this effect and how the triumphed over it....

Ì had that for about a year. Here's what i did to get over it - deliberately draw/paint/whatever like shit. Seriously, let everything be a mess for a while, it balances out that whole "it must be pixel-perfect" mindset.

Good luck with it...

this is all temporary...don't worry about it. We all go thru it...

I try to combat this by leaving what I work on when it can't move forward than returning to it when I know what I should do. Sometimes it's a week...other times it'll take a few months. I helps you stop being goal oriented and lets you focus on the best part, creating. Plus you solve old problems when working on new ones...originally my self promo started as a little experiment.

i try to stay focused on my way of using CPU : it's part of my tool bow, like pencils, brushes, spray cans, knifes, ink, etc... whatevr which new version of adobe illustrator including fuckin' extensions or macromediashitversionfortyOz, my cpu/scan/printer will be part of it.
so when i'm in the create mood, well, i let feel my body to what it wanna use.
i don't switch on the cpu for doin stuff. it doesn't work that much.
oh yeah, and there's always moment os "cxant'-do-anything-at-all". normal !

There's no artistic physicality involved in making computer art, that's why so many 'traditional' artists hate it.

Yeah, it fucks me up too sometimes. Draw ten minutes a day, every day, in your sketchbook. I wish I had enough space to paint.

the computer is integral to my art, but i would never consider myself to be a computer based artist. like the mid-broken june says, you gotta learn to think of it as just another tool. scan stuff in, print it, play about with it, draw/paint on it, scan it back in, play about with it, print it, cut it up, scan it back in, and on and on. just do whatever. experiment with it like you would with paints or any other artist medium. and never let it dictate what you want to do.
