and, specifically, http://home2.planetinternet.be/henk/leuna.htm

where they have photos like:

Seems that especially design as of late has been using related imagery to pass ideas and concepts. Nothing like looking at the "new" old to transfer new ideas thru. But you have to say, those shapes are beautiful.

Indeed. grant, I've said it before and I'll say it again and again - you rule with fists of IRON! Thanks mate. If I find anything similar, I'll post links to this here thread.

[This is prolly more apropriate to an 'abandoned buildings' thread, but I caouldn't find one].

Some of these pics are damned spooky, in a grim, wintery evening, Doctor Who-ish sort of way (especially Wood Lane):

grant, forgive me for being lowbrow, but that just looks like the world's most complicated, hyperdimensional bong.

Yummy yum yum:

Check out the Monolithic Dome site, very interesting. I particularly like the pink house in Moscow, which looks like it should be inhabited by giant cartoon mice.

Sound mirrors, used during the war (before radar) to amplify and focus the sound of aircraft coming in over the Channel:

(Also posted in the Gives Me A Happy thread in the Conversation, but this is it's proper home):

The Forevertron! - fantastic metal sculpture on a massive scale, by Dr Evermor

This guy had the best job in the world, and exactly the right attitude to his work:

"Over the next 20 years, Tom oversaw the wrecking of over 350 major industrial sites. He began to realize that the beautiful industrial objects that he was selling for scrap and meltdown were very much worth saving and "honoring." He developed an abiding respect and love for the industrial design and designers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He began to construct huge metal fantasy machines for the House on the Rock, the Don Q Inn, and many other places, using the industrial salvage material he had collected."

I've been looking for a picture of Angel before the refurbishment for what seems like an eternity! How fabulously handy!

I adore this kind of art, taking what was so new once upon a time and rebuilding it. The abandoned tube stations site above is definitely my favourite in this thread. I adore the story of underground London. The site has some very interesting information on the structure of stations when they are redesigned.

Great link that, thanks Anna!

On a similar theme, how about a bit of military architecture? There are loads of pics of fantastically gloomy, utilitarian buildings in desolate landscapes here:

Bunker Tours

Check out the Cold War section for some particularly scary interiors (nicotine yellow walls, brown floors etc).

Erm... have you heard of 20 Sites n Years? I suppose to an extent it can be called a record of industrialism. Basically Tom Phillips photographs precisely the same sites every year and it's become a chart of the area. I particularly love numbers 19, 13 and 15.

Squeal! Check this out:

Industrial Photography Archive

Hundreds of really high quality, beautiful pics of blast furnaces, factories, mines etc from all over the world. Some abandoned stuff. The page I've linked to shows steel works in Cleveland, Ohio. A good one to start with, use the navigation on the left of the page to see more.

(plus belated thanks to Tryphena - interesting project, that Tom Phillips thing)

Derelict London

Interesting pics and, in some cases, interesting history/background detail.
