Renee is a JERK

Renee. She has emerged in the four episodes shown so far to be the jerkiest contestant ever, and that is saying something. There's no trashy joy to be had in her jerkiness, as, for instance, was the entertaining Jade case (cycle 6) who referred to herself in the THIRD PERSON. Funnee. But! Renee's convictions and opinions are not shrewdly kept within, and are especially transparent during the elimination phase where you can see the schadenfreude glee she wallows in, when someone she doesn't like, or that she thinks has it too easy compared to, well, her, is critisized. Uglee. And as much as every opinion of hers borders on making me ill I have to say that this cycle is forming to be one of the most unpredictable ever. I like kooky - yet, ultimately, as was demonstrated in the latest episode, tragic - Jael, who rocked the latest photoshoot. I like the Tyra Banks lookalike, Felicia, who takes fiiierce photos but who's perhaps lacking a bit behind in the personality department (and in ANTM, personality is everything) so far. I like Sara and her delicate, old-skool features, and her smarts. I like Jaslene but I fear for her because she seems to be in the latest episode to have been broken by the criticism diverted at her in the episode before. Hell, I even like Russian Natasha, who at first seemed like a case of non sequitur and lost in translation but has proven herself to be the eternal optimist.

Yeah. But that Renee. F**k.

If you're not following but would like to and don't know how to, may I hint that the fine members of youtube are doing a fine job so you don't miss out? Search for 'cycle8'.

(Edit: The word I originally employed was deemed hateful, so I amended it to something a bit more Barbelithworthy, sorry that, I meant no offense.)

She's not a (choose your own descriptive). She's just incredibly insecure. I believe she's used to being the only flower in the pot and is shocked to find her transplanted amongst roses. She uses her 'attitude' as a security blanket.

Also, the show would be better without Tyra Banks.

Dude, you have taken a crazy pill and your writing's crazy, the show is Tyra Banks. But I would like to hear why you think so.

ANTM is in my opinion the best reality series ever, and I know the previous cycles like the back of my hand. I'm watching cycle 7 on TV concurrently with 8 on youtube, which is a sign of the wonder of the information age, and while there may be the ocassional embarassing Tyra Banks moment, I like her just fine. The nadir being her Divaesque moment in 7 ep 3; whoever told her it was a good idea should be sacked! But as a recent ANTM retrospective special from, I think, E demonstrated, she's the engine of it all and I couldn't imagine the show being any good without her. She's perceptive when it comes to the model contestants because basically the show is about revealing who the contestants are against the backdrop of the highly pressurized and slightly bizarre fashion world, and through their interactions with each other and with the panel of judges. These girls, thrown regularly into impossible situations, cannot help but share a bit of their soul, even sometimes when they don't want to show it. I imagine it being a lot tougher to perceive correctly within the world of the show, so I don't necessarily envy her job. Compare and contrast with, say, Heidi Klum of Project Runway who I think is just terrible; she doesn't come off as admirably as Tyra, largely (and one could say ironically) because she doesn't know how to show herself off in the best light; also, she just doesn't seem to both perceive and think at the same rate as Tyra, that's why there are so many superflous and excruciating moments when she presents and judges. I hate reality shows that milk moments just for the sake of milking moments, something that never happens with ANTM.

Re: Renee, I don't think she's just incredibly insecure because I would hate to think that only insecurity breeds such strong negative impulses; in the latest episode, she tried at first to convince Brittany, who was physically sick, to not participate in the contest, possibly so that she could advance to the next week, and then spend the remainder of the time before judging trying to assassiinate Brittany's character by castinig doubts if she was really sick, saying offhandedly how much she hates her and throwing steely glances at Brittany's direction. When Brittany didn't face all of it lying down, they were one wrong bark away from a physical fight! And all those little smiles during judging!

It will be interesting to see if the next episode title, The Girl Who Changes Her Attitude, refers to Renee.

It did! I just youtubed the first part of ep 5 -- more to come soon from the provider, I hope hope hope -- and Renee is making a conscious effort to reel back the, *cough*, jerkiness she exhibited in the first 4 ep's; *that* can only be a good thing because I found her unbearably unwatchable as she was channeling every dark impulse available to us, humans, with no screen to cover it up. I hope it sticks, though, and that she's not doing a Camille (for the uninitiated, Camille was the, *cough*, jerky one in cycle 2 -- who, the other contestants in a retrospective assured us, *could* have come off far worse than what the producers of the show, finally, put together -- and she, with the pretense of friendship to the one she had problems with from the start, eventual winner Joanna, made devastating allegations against her to Tyra during a dinner. Well, Renee, what you did was near-inexcusable but I'm more than willing to give you the benifit of the doubt.

Oh no you didn't!

One of my favourites goes home after a particularly impressive photoshoot, where practically everyone delivered The Shit, Sarah, Jaslene and, gulp, Renee being überfierce (and Jael delivering a heavenly face in what must've been a gruelling shoot for her -- murdered models -- 'cos she just had lost a friend of hers to an overdose the episode previous). And *shock*, in a surprising visit to Self-Awaria, Renee declares to Jay that (and I quote her verbatim) "I'm the bitch," (end quote).

Actually, the complicated case that is Renee begins to deepen; after the concerted effort to play nice, there was a situation where she was thoroughly excluded by the other girls, but she *killed* at the photoshoot and presented herself positively to the judges; I understand though she might not have been in the best frame of mind in the first handful of ep's, because as it happens, there's her financial situation that's not the best -- she says she and her husband, and son, are broke -- and they've also just recently moved to the US from Hawaii, so... I can sympathize.

This thread is making me squirm, but I do like the show. It is my guiltiest and most pleasurable TV pleasure, and I've followed every season. I can't quite put my finger on why I find it so compelling - certainly it's not the social drama. I find it fascinating to watch the process of making fashion photography (and some, though by no means most, of the shots from ANTM have been beautiful)... what sometimes gets lost in translation from pretty girl to wretched photograph. Of course, we have to watch through a layer of photography to start with, so we're one removed from the real process. But it's hard to tear my eyes away.

And honestly, if it isn't plain to you that Renee's griping is all one primal scream of insecurity, I'm afraid you don't know people very well.
