Cricket World Cup

Always on for flogging dead horses, I was wondering whether there might be some mileage in a thread about cricket. It's early days, and matches haven't reached a stage where the nerves start tingling, and many (of the few) might not even rate the world cup (mmm, lower case) as being worthy of much comment.

So. England generated a spark of hope by beating Australia and New Zealand to the fag-end of England's winter tour. That spark was soon doused in the warm up against Australia, and hoping for English success might be too much. However, mulling may be done.

I have views on the inclusion of the world's minnows, too, which may have to wait. Any takers?

ps

I bet Ego Piet tries to match it. In every game.

Presumably one's views on minnows might be changed or softened, though, by this rather striking turn of events.

I don't know that much about cricket, but I really enjoy watching it. I don't have any kind of TV service, though (and I live in America), so it makes it quite hard for me to keep up with current sporting events.

Well, Ireland also tied with Zimbabwe, which gives them a better record than England, for sure. And not to forget Bangladesh's 5 wicket victory over India.

Australia (who or where, I can't find...or is it a rumour?) have declared their intent to score 400 in an innings during the competition. South Africa might have been pleased to beat them to it against Netherlands, scoring 353-3 off 40 overs. I'm fancying SA a lot.

I love having the 'minnows' in the competition. I understand that their players accept the likelihood of defeat (overstatement, I know) but relish the chance to perform against the best in the world. Sometimes, a natural talent pops up playing for one of the smaller nations (Niall O'Brien, Jeremy Bray...), and that gives me great joy. These people deserve a chance to shine.
