US States trying to restrict the 'net

Here's the Wired article Wired News.

I find myself horribly offended by this. It's not only unworkable, but it totally guts the US Constitution's First Amendment. And how are they going to enforce this on servers such as, oh Barbelith? Are they really going to try to arrest or fine people that use this forum from Connecticut that don't have proof they're over 18?

What level of "protection" is reasonable for our children? At what point does it just become insane? And why do people keep claiming that they're protecting children when they're really just axing speech? (I've been online since I was a teen. I knew the rules. It's doable.)

So, let me make sure I got this right: One (1) state in one (1) country is attempting to pass one (1) law that will have authority and jurisdiction over the membership procedures of every (ALL) "social networking" (poorly defined category of) websites. Oh yeah, this will end well.

The Connecticut bill, which is scheduled for a public hearing on Thursday, would apply to any organized online networking organization, including chat rooms.

Under the proposal, any networking site that fails to verify ages and obtain parental permission of users under 18 would face civil fines up to $5,000 per violation. Sites would have to check information about parents to make sure it is legitimate. Parents would be contacted directly when necessary.

No, this system isn't full of holes and ridiculous demands at all. Nope.

It will work out as prosecuting the little guy that someone doesn't like and ignoring the big businesses. Which is infuriating.

Of course, if the bill passes, I'll cheerfully open up a forum of my own and defy the law just because I can.

It's ridiculously illegal, but that won't stop people from trying to pass it anyway.

It's also going up against Rupert Murdoch. There's no way that kind of battle can end well for Connecticut's legislators.

God, imagine if Tom had to individually check the ages of 5000+ people.
